The Mayans had formed eight major cities including, the capital Tikal, and other cities, Uaxactún, Copán, Bonampak, Dos Pilas, Calakmul, Palenque and Río Bec, they had a total of 40 cities. Each city had about 5000-50,000 people in their towns. In all the cities together they had about 3 million people. They had built many temples, palaces, and pyramids all over their towns and cities which now is modern day Yucatan Peninsula. The Mayan were overgrown with ruins. The main temple in Chichen Itza is one of the most known and famous ruins. There are 365 steps in all, 91 on each side and one on the top, each step represents one day of the year. This temple was for the god Kuku Kan. The Kuku Kan was a god in the form of a bird. It is said that when a person claps on the east side of the temple, the noise that the Kuku Kan makes is heard, archeologist do not understand if the Kuku Kan noise was an accident or on purpose, however they do know it is why the temple represents the Kuku Kan.
There are still people with Mayan genes, and they also still speak some of the Mayan language. Many of the people near the Yucatán Peninsula still use and practice many of the traditions today.
