In Plato's Allegory of the Cave there were multiple beliefs brought upon by the prisoners of this cave. The prisoners of the cave are supposed to parallel everyday people in the sense of how reality is perceived. The prisoners of the cave believed and only knew that reality of the shadows and developed their own belief structure and way of processing that information. Plato connected that to everyday people due to the fact that although we strongly believe the reality we have made for ourselves, there can be more that we have never been exposed to. For example, when one of the prisoners were unchained and brought out of the cave into the world, he was overwhelmed and wanted to tell the other prisoners. Due to the fact that other prisoners could…
The Allegory of the Cave is about a group of people who have lived in a cave since their childhood. These people not only live in this cave, but they are also chained and made to face a blank wall. Even their heads are shackled such that they cannot look behind them or at the sides. On the blank wall in front of them, a fire that is behind them projects shadows of objects that are passing behind them. When one of them is released to the outside world, the people who remain in the cave do not believe the version of the story concerning the reality of the shadows they have spent the whole of their lives watching and analyzing.…
Socrates explains that the allegory represents our world and the way our senses can interpret it. “The prison house is the world of sight, the light of the fire is the sun, and you will not misapprehend me if you interpret the journey upwards to be the ascent…

The movie The Matrix has many similar themes and differences to “The Allegory of the Cave”. The Matrix is about a man named Neo, he believes that he’s a normal man with a normal life but then he is contacted by a man named Morpheus. Morpheus exposes Neo to the truth that his world, where he is just regular Tom Anderson is made up. The Matrix, was created by sentient machines that subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Neo is reluctant to accept this truth that his original world, the matrix it is called, does not in fact exist. This relates to the “The Allegory of the Cave”, because Neo lived in ignorance his whole life, not knowing his reality was not the only one.…
“The Allegory of the Cave,” written in the classical age of 360 B.C. by a Greek philosopher Plato, illustrates three chained prisoners trapped within a cage never seeing the outside world The only thing that they can see are the shadows created by fire of one's passing through. One prisoner was allowed the freedom to be released. As he discovers this outside world around him, he becomes eager to tell the other prisoners about it. The prisoners do not believe him, because they are not able to see it for themselves. The one prisoner begs and pleads for them to believe him, but they never do. It is like telling an orphan about a father and mother’s love, but they never received it so therefore they do not believe it.…
who at first, when any of them is stolen and compelled all of a sudden to be up and ... look towards the light... and dredge up a steep and rugged inclination and held strong until he is forced into the person of the sun, in “the emblem of the grot.” When the students get to where they are going, they are amazement by what they see, just as the captive is amazed by the sight of the skylight exhibition of the light. The Students are also terrify by being out of there element being in a rich person's toy store, F.A.O Schwartz. Just as the prisoner would be frightened by the light of the Sun and would not want to go out of his comfort zone, of the cave. The shadows in “The Allegory Of the Cave” are also very significant when comparing the two stories together because in “the lesson” the students are only seeing there shadows of reality while being in there little ghetto of New York City. The students are quick to judge what they see from being outside of the Toy store, such as the “one lady in a fur coat” who by seeing this one person saying “white folks crazy” just as the prisoner would think whatever they saw outside of the cave would look a little crazy to them. Just as if the prisoners were to “look towards the light, he would suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen the shadows; and then conceive someone saying to him, that what he saw before was an “Illusion” which the students, who were satisfied staying in…
It is undeniable that Plato has influenced generations and civilizations long after his life. Plato has inspired countless philosophers, writers, poets and intellectuals. Specifically, Plato inspired Andrew Niccol to write the script for The Truman Show based on The Allegory of the Cave. The Truman Show puts a modern twist on the Allegory: a young man Truman is unknowingly the subject of a reality show where everyone he has ever known is an actor. He has no idea that everyone and everything he has ever known: his family, friends, job and even the island on which he resides was created by the show’s director, Christof. Truman’s journey to discovering the reality of his situation closely parallels The Allegory of the Cave.…
Plato is a historical Greek philosopher and one of Socrate’s pupils. After Socrate died in 399 B.C., Plato left his home in Athens and returned approximately twenty years later. “The Allegory of the Cave” is a short story filled with symbolism and metaphors that Plato had written before he died. In the story, Plato wrote about Socrate and his brother, Glaucon, discussing the steps to obtain the truth and why one should obtain it.…
The Allegory of the Cave by Plato questions truth, reality, and demonstrates how we are similar to the prisoners within the cave. Every person has a personal “cave” and only with knowledge and understanding can we escape from the captivity ignorance.…
“The Republic”, Plato’s longest work, has many views about philosophy and characters within and there is one character that truly stands out and entices you to read on until the very end; that was Socrates. Socrates was a mentor and a friend of Plato’s and in Plato’s eyes, he was a great and wise Philosopher that was a martyr for philosophy. Within “The Republic”, Plato has written a symbolic account about one of Socrates’ teachings of education or the enlightenment of the mind and soul; “The Allegory of the Cave”. In this, Socrates describes how education is important so that the mind and soul are enlightened and not forever dwelling within the shadows.…
“Plato’s Allegory of the Cave” was the philosophical story of people who lived in this cave, and never left. They were bound to one spot, and could never move. The only light was this fire in the middle of the cave, that was on the other side of a wall that separated the fire from the cave dwellers. There were also other people who carried objects above their heads on the fire side of the wall. This made shadows on the actual cave walls, which were the only things that the bound people knew to be true. One day one of the dwellers got to be freed from his position and was about to make discoveries of a new world.…
African Americans in society today like the prisoners in the Allegory of the Cave are hostage to their own mentality. The two characteristics commonly shared between both is ignorance to reality and a reluctance to change. Thus in the essay the prisoners are locked and chained down in darkness with only a glow of light that allows for little sight. In turn objects placed in front of the glow cast shadows before them. These shadows are then interpreted as reality. Looking forward or straight ahead is only one-way of thinking. Being able to look around and explore allows the freedom to challenge or determine if in fact what appears to be the truth is true. African Americans ancestors went through…
The Allegory of the cave says that there is quite a different between appearances and reality, and I think that this statement could not be truer. When I hear this I think of the “perfect” family. A stay at home mom, a working dad, a daughter on the honor roll, and a son on the football team. They all go to church on Sunday morning and are well involved in their community. Their family appears to be so perfect to everyone around them, but that’s just because no one knows their realities.…
Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is the factual perception on what human’s ignorant minds accept whatever they perceive without envisioning the reality. His use of “dark” imagery illustrates how a person is trapped and isolated in his own “cave” and conceives everything without visually seeing the “light” outside the cave. He conveys the idea that the “prisoners” are stuck and “chained” in their own reality because they were only shown one perspective from “childhood”. Plato wisely suggests the idea of using our senses and how we individually depend on them to find the truth outside of our “cave”. Morality being that the prisoners can remain in the cave, scared of knowing the truth.…
