One of the diversity groups is race. Race should not be discriminated because of physical characteristics. Racism means usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others. Over time, physical differences mattered such as skin color. People started believing that one’s own race was better than other races. After the 1600’s, enslaved Africans were sold to Europeans based on their dark skin. According to the article “Racism”, by the latter half of the 17th century, clear differences existed in the treatment of black and white servants.” The Africans lost their freedom and their rights. In 1776, President Thomas Jefferson, a slave-holder wrote the Declaration of Independence which declared “All men are created equal.”
Martin Luther King Jr. became a civil rights activist and was a leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He worked to end racial discrimination by delivering his famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” Before Martin Luther King Jr., African-Americans had to sit at the back of the bus, went to different schools, and even drank at different faucets. “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the
