Throughout this chapter, is about the mood differences in the bunkhouse. In the bunkhouse each person brings a different mood. For example, when George and Lennie meet their soon to be boss George tells Lennie not to say a word. This chapter has a multiple feelings caused by the presence of two characters on the ranch, which are Curley and his wife. While George can see the problems that may happen, Lennie can feel the frustrating atmosphere. For example, after Curly indicates the size of Lennie as a big guy but lacking in intelligence, he makes it a point to single out Lennie as someone who should speak when spoken to. Lennie then knows the intensity, and sees Curley as a bully. When Lennie realizes what he can physically do, then he will…
The novel, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, is an extraordinary story of two men who travel together through tough situations and remain loyal to one another. They develop a strong friendship and share many qualities. My best friend, Alla, and I have known each other for over seven years and we have a strong bond. What binds us together are our differences and loyalty, just like Lennie and George, but unlike them, we have different dreams.…
The Great Depression was an economic downturn that left most of America crippled againsts its wraith. Although, in every cave there's a glimmer of hope. The Great Depression is known as America’s greatest collapse but out of this derailment came experiences and new way of oeuvre, John Steinbeck's, Of Mice and Men displayed how the Great Depression affected the characters in the book. The characters affected by the alienation from government aid and loneliness caused by the stresses of everyday challenges from race to mental intellect.…
Would you be able to be a ranch hand, but only have one hand? Could you be the strongest guy on the farm, but not have any intelligence? Could you have a crooked back and be African American? In the novel Of Mice and Men these characters tried they're hardest to make it work through some difficult challenges.…
Did you know that in the 1930’s if somebody did something another person disapproved of they could hang the person from a tree and torture them as a social gathering? This was called lynching, they also would experiment on mentally ill people in hopes to “cure their crazies.” These are only a few of America’s dirty little secrets that are revealed about the 1930’s. In the book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the main characters George and Lennie strived to have their own farm, but everywhere they go Lennie gets in trouble forcing them out. This causes George to have to decide on whether or not to leave Lennie and go on his own. George did the right thing by killing Lennie because otherwise Lennie would have suffered, he didn’t want to have the guilt of letting Lennie die stay with him forever, and he knew that Lennie would just get in trouble again.…
I think the depression was a time were jobs were scarce also many people relied on work cards to get jobs like George and Lennie do when they go to work on the ranch where they could have shelter, food also come (stake:$50 a month) this was the time periods effect on the setting of the book. During the period capable white men were the person treated equally, a lot of women or races also handicapped a lot of people were treated like they were lower on the otem pole that is causing the character that fit into one thing…
Even though the story ends with heartache, it still doesn’t remove the fact that Lennie and George knew that their friendship kept them going. John Steinbeck brings the time period of the 1930s to life in Of Mice and Men. The story captures the tale of two men, George and Lennie, use friendship and a dream to overcome challenges. Piece by piece as challenges add, it ends with serious consequences. Steinbeck displays that weakness leads to cruelty through the characters in Of Mice and Men by Crooks trying to acquire a position over Lennie, Candy’s dog dying, and Curley’s wife speaking to Crooks.…
John Steinbeck’s novel, “Of Mice and Men,” took place during the 1930’s which was during the Great Depression. This helps us bring the migrant farm life during the Great Depression to life, letting us move along with George and Lennie's life and how they were able to survive the burdensome time. But, how did the Great Depression change society and how were the people affected by it? The Great Depression was triggered by a sudden collapse in the stock market wiping out many investors.…
Lennie's retarded mind causes the death of Curley's wife and his puppy. For example when Lennie killed Curley's wife it was because of his slow mind that caused her to panic and Lennie to shake her telling her to stop which ultimately killed her. When Lennie was petting her hair, she told him to stop because he will ruin her hair. Once she got angry, Lennie got scared and grabbed her hair, causing her to panic and lead Lennie to shake her to her death. Another example would be when Lennie was playing with the puppy and was throwing it up into the air not thinking about the consequences. Lennie was “playing” with his puppy throwing him in the air, but Lennie unable to think about the consequences quick enough shook the puppy to its death.…
In of mice and men, characters are cruel when they have power to control others of lower status. Many characters display a disregard for ones feeling or emotions through physical and verbal actions. On the ranch, hierarchy is extremely prominent and cruelty is a side effect of it. The characters that are lower of status are not cruel to those above. The character Curley’s wife, is an impeccable example of this. Even though she is of lower status on the ranch, she still has power over those below her. Crooks is one of those character, he is a coloured man and she uses this against him. During section 4, crooks is discusses plans with Lennie and candy, he forgets his circumstances in the ‘white man’s world’. He tells Curley’s wife that she has…
“And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering.” (Steinbeck 106) There are no systems to keep Lennie safe back then. “Well that girl rabbits in an’ tells the law she been raped. The guys in Weed start a party out to lynch Lennie.” (Steinbeck 42) Since they did not have any systems in place to keep Lennie safe people wanted to kill Lennie for touching a girls dress. George knew no one in the farm knew that he had a mental disability because nothing could help him. Unlike today where there are tests people who have mental disabilities take to examine what treatments they receive and where they…
Capturing the curiosity being produced by the reader, George grasps most of the attention starting as soon as his name is mentioned for the first time in the novel. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck, the author of the novel, vividly shows the development in George’s character. Both George’s compassion for the world and people around him and the way in which he controls himself change rapidly as he progresses over the three days in which the novel takes place. From dealing with Lennie’s disability to simply hold himself together on the ranch, George demonstrates how people can change and mature quickly. By tracing George’s journey throughout the novel, readers can better appreciate George as a character and Steinbeck’s overall message.…
The great depression was one of the most detrimental and difficult things ever put on the US, people all across the country lost their jobs, went hungry, lost their homes, and were forced to live in poverty. People had to resort to eating out of dumpsters, scavenging for food, living in hoovervilles, sharing a small house with multiple families. One boy states that “We ate that dog meat with potatoes” (Doc 1). People were forced to eat meat that was meant for dogs, not humans. They were forced to live of small scraps of low grade meat and potatoes for weeks at a time. African Americans at this time were also put in extreme hardships, with most of their employers no longer having enough money to hire them they were forced to live in run down shacks, and rent out rooms to other people just to make up the rent. “Negro families were forced to take in lodgers […] frequently whole families slept in one room.” (Doc 2).…
George raised the gun and listened to the voices. Lennie begged, “Le’s do it now. Le’s get that place now.” “Sure, right now. I gotta. We gotta.”And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face setand his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. John Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men, is a highly acclaimed book which most students have read. However, he brings up a lot of issues that were plaguing the world at the time. One of the main characters, named Lennie, was a mentally impaired man who cared so much for things, he would accidently kill them. As his friend, George knew that no one would allow Lennie would work because of his mental disability. In modern day society, you would believe we would have advanced to the point where disabled people can work at any job within their capabilities. However this is not the case. An issue I have found in my story that applies to real life is, how people with mental disabilities are discriminated against in the…
