The Mesozoic Era
The Age of the Dinosaur is the Mesozoic era. Its’ geological time lasted from 180 million years ago (MA) from 250 MA to 65 MA. The Mesozoic era began after the end of the Permian extinction. It has been estimated that the Permian extinction wiped out approximately 95% of marine life and about 70% of all other species on the plant. The Mesozoic era consists of three geological time periods Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. In the era of Mesozoic period the earth’s continents were a supercontinent, Pangaea, fit together like a puzzle. Because of this the climate was very warm with mild climates. The Triassic period is the first period the Mesozoic ear. It began between 251 and 199 MA. It was around this time the first dinosaurs began to roam
the earth. The climate was hot in summer and cool in the winter. The Permian extinction destroyed most of the marine like. The plant life consisted of cycad, ferns, ginkgophytes and bennettitaleans. Apex reptiles roamed the earth. The Therapsids which are more of mammal type reptile and Archosaurs which more reptilian.
The Jurassic period is the second period of the Mesozoic period. It began from 199 to 145 MA after the Triassic period. In the period our supercontinent began to split apart the continental drift began. Plant eating and meat eating dinosaurs walked the earth. These were some of the largest animal to have ever lived. Conifer forest, ferns, cycads were continuing to evolve and spread.
The Cretaceous period is the third and final period of the Mesozoic era. It began 79 MA from the Jurassic period 144 MA. The supercontinent continued to drift. This was the beginning of the flowering plants. It was once thought that pollinating insects began at the same time as angiosperms, but researcher have discover that they lived long before what was previously thought. The dinosaurs and other animals continued to evolve and bird glided in the open air. The climate was warmer and cooler in lower latitudes. It was approximately 65 MA when a asteroid collided with earth causing the K-Pg extinction.
