Throughout the story, the mother is worried about Gregor’s well-being and his health, toward the end she becomes neglectful. The way she reacted toward seeing Gregor and after she saw Gregor was confusing. She seemed desperate to see Gregor, but after he came out she did not want to see Gregor anymore. When his mother wanted to see her son, she felt “restrained” (961). She wanted to see how Gregor is feeling and how he is doing being isolated. The word restrained means being kept from or deprived. She felt kept from seeing her son because they did not want her to feel sad on the way he is. The rest of the family thinks it is dangerous for her to enter.
