If you were a bug, will your family still treat you the same way if you were a human? In the story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor is turned into a bug his family responds with different extremes of grief which results in a whirlwind of complex treatments, such as kindness, anger, and panic. However, throughout the story they grew to resent and neglect Gregor.
Throughout the story, the mother is worried about Gregor’s well-being and his health, toward the end she becomes neglectful. For example, when his mother “Let me in to see my Gregor; he’s my poor son! Don’t you understand that I must go to him?” (961). She could not cope with his condition anymore, but she wanted to see Gregor as a human and not as an insect. She felt it was time to see what has become of Gregor and
The way she reacted toward seeing Gregor and after she saw Gregor was confusing. She seemed desperate to see Gregor, but after he came out she did not want to see Gregor anymore. When his mother wanted to see her son, she felt “restrained” (961). She wanted to see how Gregor is feeling and how he is doing being isolated. The word restrained means being kept from or deprived. She felt kept from seeing her son because they did not want her to feel sad on the way he is. The rest of the family thinks it is dangerous for her to enter.
