Fear plays a great role in the story, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. Fear is in everyone who lives in the town of Salem, including the accusers. The accusers are scared to be found fraud so they accuse those who know the truth of witchcraft, and the accused are scared for their lives if they do not confess. Fear rules over Salem in this dark time and it does not end until the trials are over every person that was accused got mete.
The people who have the most fear are those who are doing the accusing, although the story may seem the opposite. Abigail says, "And marks this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you." Abigail knows that if the truth should be told about the fraud they are committing her reputation will collapse. The Putnam family are a wealthy family and Thomas Putnam's father decided to will to Thomas land that he didn't even own. Thomas Putnam says, "What anarchy is this? That tract is in my bounds, Mr. Proctor." Thomas claims that he own land that John Proctor has owned his whole life. Many disputes like this compel the Putnam family to start calling witchcraft in people they don't like or people whom they want land from. Thomas Putnam digs himself a deepening hole with every new person he accuses because that is one more person he is afraid might reveal the truth about him. When John Proctor seems as though he may reveal the truth about him and Abigail, she tries to win him over with lust.
