Although Hawthorne’s “The Minister’s Black Veil,” speaks of secret or hidden sin, it is viewed as a sarcastic parody of how in the Torah when Moses sees God, his face takes on this unearthly glow, it somehow seems to capture some of the glory of God’s presence, the people are said to want Moses to veil his face because they can’t bear to look at it, presumably out of fear, perhaps out of unworthiness to look upon it. In the case of Minister Hooper, no one has asked him to veil his face, and this causes the congregation and the people in the village not only to be fearful of him, but to judge him and gossip about the reason why he is veiled. “I don’t like it,” muttered an old woman, as she hobbled into the meetinghouse. “He changed himself into…

The narrator explains “At that instant, catching a glimpse of his figure in the looking-glass, the black veil involved his own spirit in the horror with which it overwhelmed all others. His frame shuddered, his lips grew white, he spilt to untasted wine upon the carpet, and rushed forth into the darkness. For the earth, too, had on her black veil” (48). After the couple got married, Hooper takes a glass of wine to celebrate; he notices his black veil in the mirror and runs out because he is frightened. Hooper noticing his veil in the mirror is strange. It was like he forgot that it was there. It’s as if it was a reminder of this secret and guilty sin that he is hiding. In the last sentence, it says that the earth is wearing the black veil as well. If the earth is wearing a black veil, that means that the earth is covered in sin itself. Hooper was known to love and enjoy weddings. It’s surprising that he would still show up to something so happy and cheerful with the black veil hanging over his face. Covering up one`s entire face is criticized in the Puritan society because it suggests that one is ashamed, has committed a sin or is crazy. Puritans establish these norms as a way of acknowledging that they are pure but because Hopper wears a veil he is no longer seen as pure but is looked as someone who has gone against puritan norms. Hooper is a minister who decides to wear a black veil because he wants everyone to realize that they all have secret sins like himself, but instead, the community views the veil as a “horrible black veil …. portend[ing] nothing but evil” (413). This suggests that by violating the norm and covering up one`s face with a black veil it suggests that the devil has influenced an individual to commit a sin. Puritans view the color black as death, which symbolizes the devil which is also why they view wearing a black veil as sinful and against puritan norms. Wearing a black veil would then symbolize sin and bring consequences to that individual in this case…

In article one by “Angie Fuller”, she even states “in "The Minister's Black Veil" is a symbol for the sins that mankind hides within” People get curious and do sinful things because it's only in human nature to explore and try new things whether it be law abiding or sinful. Even though it's not stated in the text, it is insinuated that he has sinned. But others think that the veil represents his marriage to the church and that’s why he left it alone when Elizabeth left him. But she left him because he wouldn’t show his face or tell her why he put the veil on. If he wasn’t hiding anything sinful, why wouldn’t he tell his fiance that it was because he's using the veil to show that he's married to the church? Also in article 2, it says ''Mr. Hooper wears the black veil to hide to symbolize his mourning for the secret sins'' this means to me that he only wears the black veil to hide the sins he has made which caused him to put sins upon himself that made him wear the black veil. Secondly, Mr. Hooper was scared of his own reflection and the only way a human being could be scared of its own…

Though many people believe it is a punishment for some terrible sin that he has committed we, the reader, discover that he has chooses to wear the veil to reflect the hidden sins within himself, but he still reminds those nearby that all God's creatures have the same hidden sins, and therefore, instead of wearing a black veil, they hide their sins behind a false front, like wearing a mask.
