The approximate time span of the Early Intermediate Period was 200 B.C to 650 A.D. During this time state-level civilizations emerge. In the N. Coast of Peru brought forth the Moche culture. Although unclear of exactly how and when this culture came about the archaeological cultures of Salinar and Gallinazo are thought to be its predecessors. The Moche culture is very well-known for their ceramics. One of the unique decorative techniques used in this culture was veristic designs on cream-to-white slipped surfaces. Interestingly enough, the Moche drew a great deal of attention to “erotic vessels.” Large adobe-brick temple structures Huaca del Sol (temple of the sun) and Huaca de la Luna (temple of the moon), can be found at this site.

Rafael Larco Hoyle, however, thought that the occurrence of similar portrait head vessels in different valleys indicated a single Moche ruler. Some of these similar iconographies include, rectangular sunken semi-subterranean plazas, stone slab tombs, Keros, textiles and hats. The relationship between Tiwanaku and Wari raise puzzling questions because these states are so far apart. However, Wari interacted with Tiwanaku through sites such as Cerro Baul in Moquegua Valley, and Pikillacta in Cuzco area. Some religious ideas come up concerning the similar iconographies. Suggestions of a central deity, the front-facing deity, and the staff god are associated with this idea. Some other ideas are that these iconographies originated in one place before the other (Wari then Tiwanaku or Tiwanaku then Wari).
