Mongols and observed that they were very organized in training for battle. Children were accustomed to fighting with bows and arrows because the Mongol adults incorporated them into their sports. This people group prepared in advance for conquests both physically and mentally. (Document 5) Juvaini, a governor elected by the Mongols, described their complex military structure, which was organized in groups of ten with one man being in charge of each group, and progressively the larger the group the fewer the leaders, as true equality. In this structure, “each man toiled as much as the next, and no difference was made between them and no one paid attention to wealth or power.” (Document 6) The Mongols were also advanced in their technology and indeed this helped their over all strategy in conquests. (Document 7) Because of their intelligent planning, the Mongols were victorious. The Mongols conquered this vast amount of territory partially through cruelty and relentlessness showing no mercy to anyone.
When in Russia, they demanded 1/10 of everything and when turned down, were outraged and brutally murdered everyone, including nuns, priests, and children, in front of each other, (Document 2) An eyewitness of Chinggis’s leadership recounted a story about a time when, in a happy mood, Chinggis granted two of his prize soldiers the chance to take home some of the people they had conquered and use them as slaves in whatever way they saw fit. (Document 3) It is questionable whether or not these men had active consciouses. The large area of land conquered, itself speaks for how ruthless and powerful the Mongol army was. (Document 8) The Mongolian text, The Secret History of the Mongols, accurately accounts the different conquests that led to this large a dominated area of land by a single army. (The Secret History of the Mongols) A letter from Pope Innocent IV to Chinggis Khan speaks in utter amazement about how the Mongols seems to have no tolerance of anyone standing in their way. It doesn’t matter to them whether the country they are invading is Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, black, white, or pock-a-dot. There are brutal with every man woman and child as well. (Document 9) By force, the Mongols achieved what they
desired. The Mongols were successful in their expansion because of their surplus of organized people. The mongols had specific gender determined jobs in their communities, but whats odd is these roles seem to be the opposite of the stereotype in most societies. With Mongols, the women do the more heavy lifting jobs, while the men sew and take care of the animals. But this orderly structure gave each gender group a job to occupy themselves and be productive while doing so. (Document 4) The fact that the Mongols were trained since children for these battles also is an example of just how organized they were. (Document 5) In their massive armies, each man was numbered, ranked, and organized into a specific area. The organization of the Mongols was the glue that held their conquest together. The Mongols accomplished conquest leading to them being in charge of such a massive area in such a brief time period through ingenious strategy in military, cruelty and being brutal, as well as having numerous men and women who were organized and orderly.
