According to historian Heather Wheeler she states that “Genghis, the man, was interested in all religions. In fact, many Mongols were shamanists at the same time they practiced other religions.” This quote shows that Genghis Khan was a man who wanted to learn of all religions, thus allowing the people they conquered and join follow what ever religion they follow. Not only this but they even gave tax benefits to clerics of these religions and allowed the freedom of religious practice without consequences. Genghis’s other reason for allowing religions is given by a religious spokesman named Mongke Khan William of Rubruck a Flemish Franciscan missionary and explorer who said “We Mongols believe that there is but one God, by whom we live and by whom we die and towards Him we have an upright heart. But just as God gave different fingers to the hand so has He given different ways to men.” This shows the logic of the Mongols religious tolerance that God has given people ideas and logic of how the universe and the world works, but they all follow the same God. The Mongols made China very diverse with religion with their tolerance of foreign religions. Although the Mongols no longer rule China they most likely left a good mark behind for future dynasties and societies. Even today it is possible that China could be influenced by the Mongolian policies used in 1205 A.D. with the household rules of the bilik, or in their laws with the yasa. Whether or not this is true, the impacts on China that the Mongol’s made is permanent with many of modern movies, art, music, and TV shows influenced or were inspired by the events in China when the Mongols took over.
