The Monkey's Paw Foreshadowing
In The Monkey’s Paw, W. W. Jacobs interprets foreshadowing to create tension and suspense by doing the following: creating tension by Sergeant-Major warning them about the paw, Herbert saying that he wouldn’t be alive to see the money, and lastly Mr. White having the habit of doing before thinking.
Will interfering with your own fate really do so until your own sorrow? Does that sound suspenseful and make you tense? Jacobs demonstrates the use of tension and suspense by foreshadowing in his story “The Monkey’s Paw”. In the next following paragraphs there will be examples on how Jacobs uses foreshadowing to create tension and suspense in his writing.
To begin, W. W. Jacobs shows foreshadowing with Mr. White. Mr. White and his son, Herbert are playing chess and Mr. White moved his piece without thinking. This is one of the key things that foreshadows the rest of the story. When Sergeant-Major warns him about the paw he insists that Sergeant-Major gives to him, this creates tension. Mr. White then makes the first wish without even thinking first of what could go wrong.

Herbert, after hearing about the paw and after the money Mr .White wished for, says that he might never see the money that his father had wished for upon the paw. This is a pretty big red flag but at first it doesn’t sound too bad. By doing this, by foreshadowing, Jacobs creates tension. Its an uneasy feeling that he makes you feel when Sergeant-Major had just warned them about the dangers of the paw. Later on Jacobs makes it suspenseful when there is a mysterious man outside. Mr. White’s wife invites him in and then he tells them that their son Herbert is dead, “..badly hurt..” “..but he is not in any pan.” Jacobs creates suspension and

The author uses foreshadowing to create suspense for the reader, so they would want to keep reading. At the beginning of the story Rainsford and Whitney have a conversation about if animals have feelings, and Rainsford says, “Bah, they have no feelings.”. Later Rainsford is being hunted like and animal by general zaroff, and he understands the, “full meaning of terror.” Another example, is when Whitney brings up that they’re going to pass and island called ship-trap island. When the crew was saying the island is evil, Whitney said he got a, “mental chill”, while listening to them. Later, when Rainsford is captured, the general says the island is called ship-trap because he makes traps to capture sailors and hunt them. In conclusion, these…

Foreshadowing is when the author gives a hint or warning to something that is going to happen. Foreshadowing holds the reader's interest because they try to use these clues to figure out what happens next. “An abrupt sound startled him. Off to the right he heard it, and his ears, expert in such matters could not be mistaken. Again he heard the sound, and again. Somewhere, off in the blackness, someone had fired a gun three times” (69). This passage is foreshadowing because the sound did not sound like an animal. Rainsford would later figure out that the sound was a human.…

In the poem “To a Mouse” there is a quote that read ”The best laid schemes often go askew” and this can easily describe how John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show that something is going to go wrong. In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to get the reader hint that bad things are going to happen. In the very first paragraph of the novella he gives us hints that Lennie is going to end up getting in trouble by having George say “Well, look. Lennie--if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always do before, I want you to come right back here an’ hide in a bush”. John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show that George is going to kill lennie, Curley’s wife is going to die, and that George and Lennie are not going to accomplish…

A suspenseful and horrific piece of literature, “The Monkey Paw” is written by W.W Jacobs. A quaint family of three receives an unusual monkey paw that is capable of making any three wishes come true. Despite the caveat of a curse attached to the paw, the family chooses to make a wish, evoking from the story a suspenseful attitude as the reader becomes wrapped up in finding out the Smiths’ fated ends. With the combination of W.W Jacobs’ settings, characters, and foreshadowing, the theme of the story, “that fate cannot be decided upon by man” is delivered pointedly and with style.…

Foreshadowing is to show, indicate, or suggest in advance on what is postliminary going to happen in a situation. It is a way of hinting at what will come later on in a story. Foreshadowing can be subtle sometimes like dark rain clouds coming before a rain storm or more direct. Many writers use foreshadowing to create suspense for the readers. Writers want readers to feel suspense in stories to feel excited about some outcome, such as the ending of a mystery novel. Foreshadowing has possessed suspense in Edgar Allen Poe short story “That Cask of Amontillado” with the wine that has gotten Forunate drunk, the court jester’s outfit that Forunate wears, and it the trowel Montressor ironically carries with him.…

Tension is created in chapter 3 building up to the moment Candy’s dog is shot with the repeated use of silence. The word ‘silence’ is used 3 times to describe the atmosphere of the room leading up to the moment the dog is shot. The silence is described as ‘[coming] out of the night and invading the room’. From this personification we can deduce that Steinbeck wanted the reader to view the silence as an intruder. Because it is seen as such, the presence of something unwanted can give a sense of danger. The characters do not want the silence present, meaning the shot will be heard by Candy. This will increase the awkward atmosphere in the room because no one is quite sure as to how Candy can be comforted. Slim attempts to console Candy by offering him a pup to compensate for his loss. Slim tells Candy that he ‘can have any one of them pups [he] want[s].’ However, Candy refuses to acknowledge his offer, strengthening the already tense atmosphere in the bunkhouse. The reader will want the tension to be broken and will hope that Slim’s attempts at doing so will succeed. Although, when they do not, it only increases the tension in the room, and the reader experiences this also. This is how dramatic tension is created surrounding Candy’s dog’s death.…

In the book Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck uses the literary element of Foreshadow to masterfully illustrate the stigma and misunderstanding of the mentally ill during the 1930's. Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. Steinbeck is able to use foreshadowing through the character Lennie by linking everything from the title of the book, to the incident in Weed, and finally to the incident resulting in his death, to show the misunderstandings of Lennie's incinitives.…

Treble structure is a form of narrative divided into three sections, referred to as iterations, and can be applied to W.W. Jacobs’, The Monkey’s Paw. The treble configuration systematically outlines, develops, and provides a conclusion to the central dilemma within the story. In The Monkeys Paw the second iteration reinforces the initial implication of the first, while the third provides closure for the main character. The first iteration of The Monkey's Paw introduces a visitor, Sergeant-Major Morris, to the White family home, which in turn sets the scene for the tale. He brings with him a magic talisman which grants its bearer three wishes. Morris reluctantly bequeaths the monkey's paw to the family along with a serious warning, “The object had a spell put on it by a Fakir….a very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and that who interfered with it did so…
