Greed can be illustrated in “The Monkey’s Paw” through Mr. White’s response to Herbert suggesting to finish paying for the bills for the house. “If you only cleared the house, you’d be quite happy, wouldn’t you” (Jacob's 378)? Then Mr. White responded by
saying “I wish for two hundred pounds” (Jacob’s 378). Mr. White’s response is a form of greed because, instead of disagreeing with Herbert he put himself first instead of others. He should have thought about something that would better the lives of several people instead of just himself. You should always be selfless not selfish.
Greed can be shown in the story called “The Necklace” by Madame Loisel saying “It annoys me not to have a jewel, not a stone, to put on” (Maupassant 33). This is very greedy because she is being very bratty and self conscious. She doesn’t give a care in the world about saving money and wastes it on a dress. She doesn’t listen to her husband and still feels that she has to blend in among all of the rich women at the party. She doesn’t realize her values and is very selfish.
Greed is not only shown in these two stories, it also relates to the real world. For example, eating a whole cake instead of sharing with your family and friends. Another example is spending all of the money that your mom gave you when you are supposed to share with your brother or sister. You should never be selfish and greedy. You should always be polite and selfless. If you are not your life will go awry.
