The Monkey's Paw Theme
In the fictional short story, "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs, a theme is don't mess with fate. This theme is determined by pieces of evidence throughout the story. One story element is the story told by Sergeant-Major Morris about how he obtained the paw, through the death of a man. "I don't know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That's how I got the paw." Another element is Mr. White's first wish, wishing for money, which causes his son to die. "He was caught in the machinery..." "There was no reply' the old woman's face was white, her eyes staring, and her breath inaudible; on the husband's face was a look such as his friend the sergeant might have carried into his first action. The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs is a story of misfortune. The author uses foreshadowing in the story to build tension, and suspense to keep the reader entertained. W.W. Jacob does this by creating certain plot twists, and pacing the story rapidly but still having lots of detail. This book reminds me of being careful for what I wish for and lessons learned. The story begins with the main character, Mr. White, receiving a monkey's paw from a friend.…

The second most suspenseful story I believe is The Monkey’s Paw. I believe this suspense story deserves the second place title because this story, much like The Tell-Tale Heart, paired fear and horror with the suspense. In The Monkey’s Paw, the author uses the fear of being buried alive, which I think is another interesting way to create dread in your reader, this helps the suspense flow a little smoother, because now your reader is worried and just has to know what happens to the character. I love that this suspense story used classic suspense, the suspense was how you would expect suspense to be; the beginning was a dark and stormy night and the characters were living their normal lives until someone showed up knocking at the door. One of…

In W.W Jacob’s short story “The Monkey’s Paw,” there are many instances of foreshadowing in order to keep readers engaged and on the edge of their seats. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” the theme of despair is explored through the author’s characterization of Mr. and Mrs. White after Herbert’s death. "I'm sorry----" began the visitor. "Is he hurt?" demanded the mother. The visitor bowed in assent. "Badly hurt," he said quietly, "but he is not in any pain. "Oh, thank God!" said the old woman, clasping her hands. "Thank God for that! Thank----" She broke off suddenly as the sinister meaning of the assurance dawned upon her and she saw the awful confirmation of her fears in the other's averted face. She caught her breath, and turning to her slower-witted husband, laid her…

A suspenseful and horrific piece of literature, “The Monkey Paw” is written by W.W Jacobs. A quaint family of three receives an unusual monkey paw that is capable of making any three wishes come true. Despite the caveat of a curse attached to the paw, the family chooses to make a wish, evoking from the story a suspenseful attitude as the reader becomes wrapped up in finding out the Smiths’ fated ends. With the combination of W.W Jacobs’ settings, characters, and foreshadowing, the theme of the story, “that fate cannot be decided upon by man” is delivered pointedly and with style.…

This shows how greed can make people blind and make them do things that they would not normally do again, proving why the theme of this passage is to not be greedy and not to put others in danger. So the Frog and the Mouse has the theme of not putting others in danger for your own personal gain, but we can not forget about the other passage, Ruthless by William DeMille. The reason why these stories share a striking resemblance in theme is because in the second story a man named Judson lives in the woods and is leaving to go to the city and decides to put poison in his whiskey to catch the thief that drinks it. In the passage it states "The woman's face was pale, Don't do it Judson, she gasped It's horrible-its murder. " (DeMille 15)…

The Monkey’s Paw, written by W.W. Jacobs, is a short story about the consequences of messing with fate. Mr. White is a simple man living with his wife, Mrs. White, and his grown son, Herbert. One evening Sergeant-Major Morris, a family friend back from India, visits them and shows them a monkey’s paw he had gotten there, saying that it will grant a man three wishes, but that it was made to prove that when you mess with fate, bad things happen. Even with the warning, Mr. White uses the monkey’s paw to grant his wishes, and soon pays the price. I think the theme of this story is basically, “Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.”…

To begin with, uncertain circumstances are unclear of their results before they happen. In the story, sergeant-major Morris mentions, “But I warn you of consequences,” which means that something bad might happen. Also, including the old man and the old lady, lots of other people all oppose of man taking the Monkey’s paw because it may cause harm to the man. Besides, others who were interested in it wished to use it and then pay afterwards if it worked. From these, we can know that uncertain circumstances are not only unclear, but may also result in devastating consequences.…
