The Monuments Men By George Clooney
The Monuments Men, directed by George Clooney, is a 2014 film based on World War II. This movie reveals another crime the Nazis were committing which was the theft of many famous art masterpieces and hiding them inside different mines all around Germany so no one could find them. To stop the Nazi thieves from taking priceless masterpieces away from anyone else, the United States created a unit containing seven men to retrieve the masterpieces and return them to where they belonged; they were known as the monuments men. Once the monuments men heard about Hitler’s plan to destroy every piece of art he stole, it was a race against time. The team would sacrifice their lives to save the artwork from any destruction, but is risking your life for a piece of art worth it? At the beginning of the movie George Clooney’s character, Frank Stokes, gives a speech to his men before going out to find the missing art, in that speech he states, “That your lives are more important than a piece of art”. Although, as the movie progresses and men begin to die it becomes clear that some people would die to save a piece of art. For instance, when Donald died from a Nazi soldier, it was to try and save the Bruges Madonna and Child from being taken by them. I believe this was a turning point for the monuments men, after losing a friend who tried to save the Bruges …show more content…
Claire Simone had worked in the Jeu De Paume museum in Paris where many famous pieces of art were shown. She had a book which kept track of where every piece of artwork went when it left the museum and was even color coded. She helped the monuments men by giving them not only that book, but she gave them information she found while spying on the Nazis inside the museum. She helped lead the men to the castle known as Neuschwanstein, where some of the sculptures from the Jeu De Paume were

It is located in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and is the tallest stone structure in the world, forever displaying the hope of the people. Surrounded by flags, it represents the ideals of America, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The flags themselves represent purity, vigilance, and perseverance, among other things, all essential to the success of the American Dream today. The background of painting gradients from a dark blue down to an off-white because there is hope even in the hardest times, and encourages striving for what is right even when it seems impossible. The lack of detail in the painting is indicative of the straightforwardness of the American Dream. It does not need embellishment, it is the same for everyone and exists in the simplest form in every American heart. The Washington Monument showcases the American Dream, the dream that every American can achieve anything they set their mind to, just like George Washington did while he fought for freedoms that we still live by in this modern…

Those who were spiritually sensitive sensed that God preferred Bush over Gore in the 2000 Presidential election. Despite being a member of the Satanic Skull & Bones fraternity (as depicted in the Hollywood Movie “The Skulls”) and living a life of drugs and alcohol, George W. Bush had had a genuine born-again experience with Jesus changing his heart. Unfortunately, after Bush was elected he started two unethical wars (Iraq and Afghanistan). All he needed to do was pray to God and ask “God, should I start these wars?” The answer would have been an emphatic “No!” Bush then could have confronted Cheney and Rumsfeld and whomever else and said “Look, I know you want to go to war, but God told me not to.” He did not do that and tragedies…

In our world people forget what you told them and people forget an experience that they had in the past, but people never forgot how they felt and how an object of significance made them feel. Furthermore, Art and it’s culture has had a great impact on the people throughout history. A painting has its significance and it was created with an intention that only the artist knows. The people who view the painting have a feeling when they see it, it connects them to their own version of fantasy and makes them feel a certain way. Similarly, The Column of Trajan was an ancient ruins, which was built in a victory by the Roman Army.…

Los Angeles has always been a city of contradictions. Things are not what they seem like in the big city that is part of wild nature with hills and desert and yet is the emblem of modern life with endless freeways and cars moving in all directions. Los Angeles is the city of dreams where stars are made in Hollywood, but also the place of poverty, corruption and crime. The many faces of Los Angeles are captured in Truman Capote’s narrative essay “Hollywood”. The essay was published in the collection Local Color from 1950. The story is about Truman Capote’s holiday trip to Hollywood in December. The story takes place in a plane, where Truman Capote is on his way to L.A. He is sitting besides Thelma, a young, black, woman, who are about to make a living in Hollywood, and hopefully becomes famous. They accompany each other for some time, until Thelma is dropped in the middle of Hollywood by the taxi driver. Later he visits the famous Miss C. through their mutual friend Nora Parker.…

I believe this is the reason so many different businesses, companies and people, use, wear, or have common articles with famous art images on them. They are trying to have the “greatness” or the “divinity” as it were, rub off a little on them. Coffee mugs with great works of art on them, or in my case, a yearly calendar with paintings by Van Gogh on each page, help us feel better about ourselves. I like being able to look at the calendar on the wall in my house, and being able to see a different work by Van Gogh each month; I feel a little better each time I look at it. While I might not be able to ever own one, I can at least have likenesses of them on my wall calendar, and I don’t feel so much like a savage, but a little more cultured for it.…

300, which was based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller’s, is a film that still has many anxious people awaiting to see it. It was directed by Zack Snynder and is considered by many a spin off of Dawn of the Dead. This movie contains nonstop action with so much blood that it may be to much for someone to view in one sitting. 300 can be characterized through a suffering plot, unrealistically portrayed strength of warriors in battle, jaded dialect, and it’s mind-blowing graphical images.…

Many things can go wrong when a work of art is restored. Many materials used in the previous centuries are not made the same way today. This can make a restored piece of art look completely different than the original. Whoever is restoring the piece of art can also change the way the restored piece looks. According to Vogel, “There was the option, popular in the case of ancient sculptures, of leaving masterworks unrestored if they cracked with age, excavation, or accidents – a process conservators often call ‘the romance of the fragment’” (A1). Despite all that can go wrong when restoring a piece of art, the statue of Adam is now back on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where others can see the restored statue and decide for themselves whether the restoration was a success or a failure. Jack Soultanian concludes, “It’s always been a gem in the collection but now it’s presented according to its status” (qtd. in…

Back in Ancient Rome, rulers and Emperors were wanting to build great monuments, sanctuaries, and arena’s. The emperors would enslave lower class people to build all of these buildings, while upper class citizens would enjoy them. The Roman people have unique methods and building strategies which helped them thrive as a community. The Ancient Romans have been known for their great architecture, which has helped modern day people build the monuments we build today.…

Andre Bazin believed realism lies at the heart of art, and that art is the process of reproducing reality. He believed that an artefact should ‘helps us to remember the subject and to preserve him from a second spiritual death’ (Bazin 1967: 10). He saw art as a way of immortalising mortal things; he compares painting and sculptures to the ancient practice of mummifying in Egypt, ‘to keep up appearances in the face of the reality of death by preserving flesh and bone’ (Bazin 1967: 9). I agree with this point that Bazin made, this power that artefacts posses, making long lasting legacies, can be seen all around us, take the great pyramid of Giza, built sometime before 2000 BC, was symbol of Pharaoh Khufu’s power and greatness, and although Khufu and the society of ancient Egypt, as a whole, are long gone, their presence is still felt today through the pyramid. However it should be noted that many artefacts would lose their meaning if they are not accompanied with some kind of explanation, such as the Stonehenge, although a brilliant piece of art, no one knows what it stands for. Therefore we can conclude that one cannot simply immortalise himself, so to speak, by creating a piece of art.…

I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with my mom and my sister. I didn’t quite enjoy it at first, but as I explored the museum more, I began to feel enlighten at the sight of the different forms of art. It was hard for me to choose just two pieces out of all the amazing sculptures and paintings in this museum. I finally made the decision to write about two different pieces, from two different cultures, time periods, and even mediums. The first piece I chose was a sculpture titled “Marble Statue of a wounded Amazon.” The second piece is a painting by Joos Van Cleave titled “The Last Judgment.”…
