The Monuments Men were a group of men and women who served to recover the stolen paintings in World War II. They recovered millions of paintings that were stolen by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi’s in World War II. The Monuments Men were an important military group in World War II because of their origin, assignment, and number of paintings recovered.
The Monuments Men were created from 14 different nations who were either museum directors, curators, art historians, archivists, architects, educators, and artist. Their missions consisted of discovering hidden monuments deep inside salt mines, abandoned buildings, and castles. The Monuments Men found 1,500 buildings full of stolen artifacts in Germany. During a mission they discovered over 6,000 paintings inside 137 tunnels in Altaussee Salt Mine in Austria. Another important mission for the Monuments Men was Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle where it took them six weeks to empty out all of the stolen paintings.
Thousands of documents and artwork from famous artist consisted of Vincent Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Rodin, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, and several more. The value of the Mona Lisa in World War II was 100 million dollars. The value of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper is at least 150 million dollars.

The Last Supper was being stored in a church that had been bombed. The Last Supper had almost became history when the bomb had been thrown nearly 80 feet away from the mural. The building was almost completely destroyed from the bomb but luckily the wall that the painting was on was still standing. Because they wanted to keep the mural safe the Monuments Men were not able to look at the painting. One of the Monuments Men had said “ Leonardo’s Last Supper may be in ruins”. This is also not the first time the painting has almost been destroyed. During the Napoleonic period when the soldiers were bored they would use the painting as target practice.
