In Richard Connell’s thrilling short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, an uneasy mood is constructed by Rainsford’s illusive adventure on Ship Trap Island. Many moments in the short story help build up a feeling of uneasy, one being when Winston uses a simile to describe the evil of the atmosphere, saying that the air “ was actually poisonous”, and that he felt a “mental chill, a sort of sudden dread” when the ship neared the island (Connell 1). The author makes the reader feel uneasy by making just the atmosphere itself seem evil and dangerous with the simile comparing the air to something that kills and is to be avoided. Readers also naturally pick up the feeling of dread from Whitney, which significantly helps in building…

In “The Most Dangerous Game”, the author uses many methods to develop the characters and how they see the world, themselves, and others around them. First, Rainsford gets stranded on an island after he is talking to a friend on a yacht he was on about how the hunter is dominant and how the animals hunted do not feel anything which could be foreshadowing a change in the story and what it’s based on. After he arrives on the island, Rainsford immediately goes and sees a sign of struggle in bushes and hears shots fired. This, and the way that Rainsford was able to follow the tracks of the hunter, shows that Rainsford is a fairly efficient hunter; that is, showing the audience what the main idea of the story most likely is, which the hunter vs. the hunted.…

Marc Bekoff once said, “These enthusiasts often like to hang signs that say ‘Gone Fishin’’ or ‘Gone Huntin’’. But what these slogans really mean is ‘Gone Killing’”. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford falls into the water on Shiptrap Island. He goes in search for food and finds a palatial chateau. General Zaroff gives him food and clothes. But, then Rainsford finds out about General Zaroff’s game and wants to leave the island immediately and instead of letting him go, the general wants to hunt Rainsford. In the end, Rainsford ends up winning the “game” and gets to sleep in the bed at the palatial chateau. Even though General Zaroff seems civilized with his polite actions, he is actually uncivilized because he is mentally unstable.…

One critic remarked that “Ironically, Zaroff’s belief in his invincibility as a hunter, weakens him and causes his defeat.” After reading “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, I think thins comment is right on target and I agree with him one hundred percent. General Zaroff: Antagonist; Zaroff considers himself a god who can snuff out life as he pleases. Zaroffs’s madness stems from a life of wealth, luxury, and militarism, which inflate his ego and sense of entitlement and impose few limits on his desires. Zaroff began hunting at an early age when he shot his father’s prized turkeys and continually sought out bigger game. His bloodlust and passion for hunting eventually prompted him to hunt men, the most cunning and challenging prey he could find. Accustomed to death, General Zaroff lost the ability to distinguish men from beasts, suggesting that he has slipped into barbarism and lost his humanity. Connell describes Zaroff’s sharp pointed teeth and smacking red lips to dehumanize him and highlight his predatory nature.…

“Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong” (Connell 27). Rainsford did play the “game” in Richard Connell’s short story, proving that only the strongest survive. Who knew one fall could lead to so much misfortune. From the minute he fell off his yacht, Rainsford found himself in the biggest challenge of his life. In this short story, you learn that humans are not the only ones who have feelings, but that animals have feelings too. What most readers get out of this story is to be ready for anything that comes your way. At first he was on a yacht smoking a cigar to running for his life on an island.…
