Many people suffer from a common condition called heartburn; this condition is caused when someone’s stomach produced excess amounts of gastric acids. One of the abundant acids is Hydrochloric Acid (HCl); this acid has a pH level of 1. When there is too much acid in our stomach, it rises up to the esophagus, which causes the burning sensation known as heartburn. You can treat this if you take antacids, antacids are mild bases that can help neutralize the stomach and ends heartburn.
GENERAL NEUTRALIZATION EQUATION:
Acid + Base = H2O + NaCl
HCl + NaOH = water + salt
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to compare and see which brand of antacid is the most effective for neutralizing acid and whether or not price can …show more content…
But for the Gelusil Antacid when the HCl was added the solution became neutralized but not clear. This was because the medical ingredients were different, which are listed below:
• Aluminum Hydroxide Al(OH)3
• Magnesium Hydroxide Mg(OH)2
• Simethicone
ii) Error Analysis:
1. PROBLEM:
If the materials were not cleaned properly and chemicals are still inside from the previous experiment it would affect the results of your current experiment.
SOLUTION:
Before you start the next experiment make sure you have thoroughly washed the materials to make sure there is no remaining residue of any old chemicals.
2. PROBLEM:
Miss counting drops of either the HCl or antacid could affect the results of the experiment.
SOLUTION:
Put a specific measured amount of each substance (e.g. 5ml of the antacid and 2ml of acid at a time)
3. PROBLEM:
If you use another antacids pipette in a different antacid. The two different antacids would mix thus causing an incorrect product.
SOLUTION:
A solution to this problem is make sure you remember which pipette belongs to which antacid or you could put some tape on it so you can differentiate between the two …show more content…
Gelusil
3/5 = 0.6
0.6 drops of acid reacted to 1 drop of antacid.
Q4. Based on your results, what was the most effective antacid? Explain your reasoning. Indicate the active ingredient in this antacid and write a balanced chemical equation to show the reaction between your active ingredient and the hydrochloric acid (HCl) in your stomach.
ANS:
The most effective antacid was Life Brand Milk of Magnesia because it neutralized 2.6 drops of acid with 1 drop of antacid, which was the most from brand that was compared. The active ingredient in this antacid was magnesium hydroxide.
Balanced Equation: Mg(OH)2 +2HCl = 2H2O +NaCl2
Q5. In a normal human body, we add BASE (an antacid) to and ACID (our stomach) to prevent heartburn. In this lab, we added ACID to the BASE. Was this a realistic way to carry out our test? Explain your reasoning.
ANS:
Yes, I think was a realistic to carry out the test because the same chemical reactions are happening. Obviously in your stomach you have to add the BASE to the ACID, but it does not matter which way it is done because the result will be the same.
Q6. Which is more beneficial: to take an antacid BEFORE or AFTER you feel the heartburn?
