In Latin, the Hebrew word ‘’ben’’ is translated to (son of) and becomes the Greek-style suffix ‘’-ides’’ to form ‘’Moses Maimonides’’. Moses Maimonides was born in Cordoba, Spain, on the eve of Passover, of the year 1135 C.E. His father named Maimon was closely related to King David, his job was as a judge in the city’s rabbinical court. His mother died when Maimonides was very young, this suggests that Maimonides siblings were the children of a second wife. At the young age of thirteen Maimonides and his family had to swiftly flee his hometown Cordoba as a result of a militant Islamic sect took control of the city. The Jewish society was violently attacked and many synagogues were destroyed. Great troubles followed Maimonides as his family had a hard time finding a new place to live. Maimonides began his works very early on in his life at the age of sixteen when he composed the Millot ha-Higgayon in Arabic; it focused on the analysis of several terms found in a branch of philosophy known as metaphysics. Maimonides continued to work hard and began producing his major works at the age of twenty-three. His first major work was his account on the Mishna, which was also written in Arabic. The Mishna is a collection of Jewish laws that have existed since the third century. Maimonides account on the Mishna involved shedding light on certain words and phrases and highlighting important information in theology, science or archaeology. Maimonides greatest component of this work were his abundant essays that dealt with general philosophic issues contained in the Mishna. Maimonides finished his analysis ten years later when he was thirty-three years old. At this point he began his work on the code of Jewish law known as the Mishne Torah otherwise known as the ‘’Torah Reviewed’’. Maimonides spent ten years on this piece of work, it was written in Hebrew and incorporated the basics of Jewish thought and belief and the complex code of Jewish Law. It is fourteen volumes long and complies the work of the entire Talmud.
