A great deal of opportunities were created for lower classmen during the Middle Ages due to the growth of Towns and Trade. The fact that they could own land, set up Serfs among other lower classmen for success. Also, Serfs being able to leave their lord’s feudalistic land, set them up socially and economically to move to the middle class. Socially, they set up communities and expanded their land. Economically, they made huge leaps…
Overall, the Middle Ages was the period from about 500 to 1450. This was because it was the period which came between the fall of Rome and the start of the modern era. Although many can argue that the middle ages were a Dark Age, this period can best be labeled as an age of faith because of the great extent of authority the Catholic church had, the result of Pope Urban II’s call of the Crusades, and the peace and tranquility that the church brought throughout…
Fourteenth century Europe could be best described as the “Dark Ages” of Europe. Between 1300 and 1450, Europe experienced series of catastrophic moments from economic difficulties, plague, war to increased crime and violence. The Black Death caused Florence to lost between one half and two-thirds of its 1347 population of 85,000. War also played an important part in Europe’s history. The Hundred Years’ Year (1337-1453) brought social and economic difficulties to both France and England. In France, hundred and thousands of acres of farmland were destroyed turning France into a shamble. Although the war provided unusual opportunities for all social groups, when the war ended knights and nobles went back…
Europe underwent some major transformation from 1100-1300. The High Middle Ages, as this period was known, economic, political, religious and cultural revivals began to shape Europe. These changes were made possible for several reasons. One of those reasons was that Europe had become more settled after numerous invasions that occurred in the Early Middle Ages. The medieval kings began to apply centralized control. Advancement in agricultural practices also contributed to the European reform, as increased food supply stimulated commercial and urban growth. Also, due to pressures from the church, internal warfare and chronic violence in Europe was declining.…
Finally, as many people look at the Middle Ages as a time in which many great and barbaric things took place, not only of people really noticed any other things. One thing that many people tend to skip by would be the different types of clothing that the era showed off. And that very type of clothing would be the Farthingale. A farthingale was a bell-shaped hoopskirt worn under the skirts of well-to-do women, in which first originated in Spain. It was only worn by the wealthy class, as the commoners would wear only gowns. And because of that, it proves itself to be quite recognizable toward most of queens back then as they were the ones who worn it. However, it wasn’t just a sense of fashion at the time; it served itself as an important part…
The Middle Ages is often a time that is mislabeled. Some consider it to be a time of darkness and disorder. Others, specifically literary people, make it seem like a beautiful time of chivalry and knights who saved distressed maidens. Author Jeffrey L. Forgeng writes, “We are inclined today to romanticize the Middle Ages.” The Middle Ages was truly a time of great change for Europeans. It can be characterized by advancements in architecture and art, a strong religious following, and advancements in social and economic systems. One of the most discussed events during this period of time was the Black Plague. This pestilence devastated Europe but it can also be argued that it…
During the time periods 800 to 1300 around ninety percent of people who were living in Europe during the middle ages were in poverty, lots of them were peasant farmers who would do a lot to make their lives better or to have a change in them. They would wear clothes that would hopefully last a lifetime for them, and never bathe more than once a month which included the people who were more fortunate. They would usually never live past the age forty because of diseases or starvation. An English poet William Langland describes the types of living conditions they had, “As prisoners in cells, or poor folks in hovels, Charged with children and over charged by landlords. What they may spare in spinning they spend on rental, On milk, or on a meal to make porridge. To still the sobbing of the children at mealtime. Also they themselves suffer much hunger. They have woe in winter time…” William describes how they didn’t have time or the resources to get what they wanted for comfort, but rather on what they needed to survive. When Pope Urban II called for a crusade to help the Byzantines and to free the city of Jerusalem, many people looked at this as an opportunity. Because of the living conditions that many of the people had a big amount of people joined to get away from the famine and disease. Others left to get away from their tiresome, monotonous lives. However the biggest reason why people joined was to help the pope and to defend their Christian religion. Many people started to join the Crusade army, which a great amount were peasants, around a little fewer than half could even be considered armed soldiers. A good portion of the army did not have military training at all. However even under the…

The Dark Ages was a time of many systems and new innovations, but was very poorly recorded. From previous lessons about the Dark Ages prove that it wasn’t a time of Darkness, but simply a middle ground between the era or Ancient Greece and Rome and the Renaissance. Hence the name, The Middle Ages. The Dark Ages is an appropriate term to describe the Middle Ages only in the sense of lack of innovations and knowledge recorded for the easier connection of the Renaissance thinkers and the great knowledge from Ancient Greece and Rome. The Dark Ages is only relevant when referring to the historical knowledge of the time, rather than the people of the time, the Middle Ages did have major points of history that continue to influence us today, and the…

The Middle Ages were known by many historians as a time of ignorance, where little to none advancements took place. The church was the center of attention and beliefs were strictly based off of superstitions. It was a period of faith, disease, terror, feudalism, and advancements in art and architecture. For the most part, the Middle Ages were composed of and relied on three main systems; feudalism, manorialism, and the Roman Catholic Church. All three of the systems were pretty reliable until a time period between 1000 CE and 1600 CE. During this short but crucial time period, disaster struck Western Europe. All three of these systems were altered dramatically and they were basically wiped off the map. The causes of the decline of the Middle…
