Nicholas Sparks has written multiple novels that have evolved into movies, such as The Notebook, The Last Song, Dear John, Message in a Bottle, and A Walk to Remember. The movies previously mentioned are as equally good as the novels except for Dear John. To me, Dear John is one of the best books written by Nicholas Sparks, yet the movie is the worst. The plot is excellent, but it is poorly portrayed in the movie. Several literary elements are found in both the movie and the novel, but the most profound element is comparison.
The plot varies a tad from the book to the movie, but the major events are corresponding. The story is about John Tyree and Savannah Curtis and their love story. John is in the United States Army, but he meets Savannah, a college student, while on leave. Sparks fly instantly, and they spend the next two weeks getting to know each other and falling in love. When John goes back over seas, he and Savannah promise to stay in touch through letters. As time goes by, Savannah becomes involved with Tim, a family friend, and Alan, his autistic family member. Savannah explains this to John through a letter; Tim and Savannah eventually marry. John goes into a deep depression and burns all of the letters from Savannah. He then is informed with the news of his father’s stroke. He has not got along with his father in years, but he still cares deeply for him. He visits his father, who passes away shortly after the stroke. John also visits Savannah while in the United States. While visiting her, he finds out that Tim is in the hospital with cancer and anonymously donates his father’s coin collection to pay for a special treatment for the cancer. The story ends on way in the book and a completely different way in the movie. Although the plot is basically the same in both the novel and the movie, there are minor differences.
Throughout the movie, I noticed numerous differences when compared to the novel. For instance, in the book
