There was no blame on the soldiers. The director tried to show them innocent. And especially the kids. Nobody blamed them for dreaming about their letters to go to the war. Nobody blamed them for killing those American soldiers, but everybody blamed those generals that sent those kids to the war, everybody blamed Hitler for starting everything. And that’s the real difference between the two movies and the two Germanys. If The Bridge was made by the GDR, they would have blamed the kids a little bit too. They would have mentioned that those kids wanted to go to the war themselves. They all had the chance to somehow not go to the war, but they all stayed. They even had the chance to leave the bridge and go back, but they decided to stay. So they were guilty too. Although, once again it’s not something to judge easily. Those kids were guilty for wanting to go to war and killing people, but at the same time they were not that much to blame either. Because for years they were taught to love their fatherland. They were taught that when it comes to serving your country, even if it means to sacrifice yourself, you have to do it. And so those kids weren’t that much to blame at the end. They were just kids. They didn’t know what was actually going
