When he went to go visit his grandmother and the moustache made her think of the past and all her regrets. In the text it states “I still say a seventeen-year-old has no business wearing a moustache...but I also had learned to like it.” (Cormier 1). This piece of evidence relates to my theme because at first, Mike was just growing a moustache as an experience to see if he can grow one and he successfully did. He liked how it looked on him so he wanted to keep it. Even thought he liked it, his mother and many other people didn’t and it started to affect him. Relating to this, the song “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison explains that every beautiful thing has a dark side but not everyone might notice it. In the text it says “Every rose has its thorn/Just like every night has its dawn/Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song/Every rose has its thorn” (Poison 10-13). The chorus of this song relates to my theme because the artist’s voice was power and had a lot of persuasion which made me think that what the lyrics actually mean when they are put together. In “The Moustache” symbols were used to find the theme. To Mike the moustache didn’t mean anything, but to his grandmother it meant forgiveness and freedom. In the text, it said “I recalled my grandfather as tall and thin. Like me…And he wore a moustache. I brought my hand to my face. I also wore a moustache now, of course....Nana, this is Mike your grandson, not Mike your husband.” (Cormier 5) The moustache was a way of the grandmother feeling like her husband Mike forgave her.
