Thinking, Extroverted Feeling, and Introverted Feeling. (Information About Personality Types, 2015)
Katharine Briggs seen Jung’s work, she then started quietly working on her own to develop these theories further. But Katharine’s daughter Isabel was the one responsible for making the personality types visible. While Isabel was doing her own work, and using her mother and Jung’s work, it became apparent to her, that there was another distinctive preference which hadn’t been defined by Carl Jung, it was Judging and Perceiving. There is now a developed theory that every individual has a primary mode of operation within four categories, which are our flow of energy, how we take in information, how we prefer to make decisions, and the basic day-to-day lifestyle that we prefer. Within each of these categories we are either, Extroverted or Introverted, Sensing or Intuitive, Thinking or Feeling, and finally, Judging or Perceiving. Naturally we all use one mode of operation within each category more easily and more frequently than we use the other mode of operation. The combination of the four categories defines our personality type. (Information About Personality Types, 2015)
There are eight different letters that each personality type consists of, this makes up sixteen different personality types. The eight different letters are, (E, I) (S, N) (T, F) and (J, P). The E stands for Extrovert, and the I stand for Introvert. the main difference between extroverts and introverts is that introverts gain their energy by being alone and the extroverts gain their energy by being with others. The S stands for Sensing, and the N stands for Intuitive. The main difference between sensing and intuitive is, sensors take in information through there five senses and through facts, and intuitive take in information through patterns, impressions and possibilities. The T stands for thinking and the F stands for feeling. The main difference between thinking and feeling is that thinkers make decisions based on facts and feelers make decisions based on values. The J stands for Judging and the P stands for perceiving. The main difference between perceivers and judgers is that judgers prefer their world to be structured and planned, while perceivers prefer their world to be open ended. They find that having plans is stifling. (Understanding The MBTI, 2012)
After taking my own personality type quizzes, I found the results were quite interesting. The first personality quiz, the human metrics Jung Typology test, scored me as ISFP. The test indicated that I am forty one percent introvert, nineteen percent sensing, forty seven percent feeling, and twelve percent perceiving. According to this test I have moderate preference of introversion over extroversion. I have slight preference of sensing over intuition. I have moderate preference of feeling over thinking. I have slight preference of perceiving over judging. For the second quiz I got ISTP. According to this personality type, people with ISTP personalities enjoy having time to think alone, and are fiercely independent. They also love action, new experiences, hands on activities, and the freedom to work at their own pace. The third quiz I took gave me the same result as the first, that I am personality type ISFP. My fiancé, Josh took my fourth and final quiz about me. The personality type I got was ISFJ. This one was interesting because someone else took it about me. Naturally I was wanting to know more about this personality type. I had to do more research to really understand the personality types, and the meaning of each letter. According to this personality type, ISFJ’s are loyal, supportive, and reliable individuals who are committed to the people they consider important. ISFJ’s will go out of their way to ensure the well-being of those around them, often ahead of their own needs. They have strong organizational ability and prefer working with established policies and procedures. They are meticulous and are good at working with set schedules and deadlines. The only difference between the results I got and the result my fiancé got for me is the last letter, he got Judging and I got Perceiving. After researching and learning what I’ve learned, I honestly feel I know which personality type is mine. The personality type ISFJ, is my correct personality type. ISFJ is the result my fiancé got for me, but I couldn’t agree with this more. Being an introvert fits me perfectly, I would rather stay home and binge watch a television show then to go out with a group of people. The whole partying social life, isn’t really my cup of tea. My family says I’m a “home body”. Going to a public event gives me the most anxiety. For example, one year my family and I went to the state fair, we were planning to spend all day. An hour after we got there I had got myself into a complete anxiety attack, just from being in the crowd. The fair trip was cut short. for the second letter in this personality type I am a sensor, again I feel like this is incredibly accurate. I would agree I am practical, and have a down to earth attitude. I would also agree that I remember details that are important to me very well, for example I am one of those people who can listen to a song or watch a movie and be able to quote it almost word for word. My third personality type letter stands for feeling. Here I have another accurate trait. According to the Myers-Briggs type indicator, people with the feeling trait follow their hearts and emotions and care little about hiding them. I like this, because, in my opinion telling people how you really feel is extremely important, you should never hide your feelings. I am one to always wear my heart on my sleeve. Lastly, I got the personality trait, Judging. I agree this is my correct trait, because I always must have a plan. Although prospecting sounds like a lot of fun, I’d have to say, it would really bother me to just “go with the flow”. My lifestyle is very structured, everything I do has a specific time for me to do it. I am the person who has a list for everything, whether it be grocery shopping or just a list of what I’m going to be doing throughout the week, and if something happens and I should get off task, it will literally put me in a panic. For example, if there’s something I need to get done, I will forget to eat and I won’t get any sleep until its done. For me, it’s always work before play, maybe for some that isn’t the best trait to have, but for me it works, and that’s just how it must be.
For my personality type ISFJ, we are said to be motivated by the desire to help others in a practical, organized way. We are driven by our core of personal values, which often include upholding tradition, taking care of others, and working hard. ISFJ’s enjoy work that requires careful attention to detail. They also want to feel they have fulfilled their duties, but do not want to be thrust into the spotlight (Truity, 2017). I absolutely love this, because I am going to college to become a nurse. Having a nursing career is one of the top careers for my personality type. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always dreamed of someday being a nurse. I think being a nurse would be the perfect career for me, because I love to help, and take care of people. My grandmother had cancer, and I remember my mom being so exhausted from taking care of her, sometimes at night she wouldn’t hear her call for her, so I would get up and clean her up and put her back to bed, and she always would tell me, I was meant to be a nurse. I loved hearing her tell me that, because then I knew I was doing a good job at taking care of her. Of course, There’s a lot more careers for ISFJ’s, that include being a dentist, a health care administrator, a speech pathologist, a veterinarian, a medical assistant, and many more amazing careers. (Truity, 2017)
Everyone has different personalities of course, and that’s why we all communicate differently.
ISFJ’s are said to take a supportive role in communication, listening to tune into the needs of others. We tend to be sensitive and want to collaborate to support everyone involved. We IFSJ’s are very loyal to what we see first-hand, and will often share perspectives based on personal experience. In relationships, the ISFJ is generous, accommodating, and loyal. We are dedicated to the task of taking care of our loved ones, and take our family responsibilities seriously. ISFJ’s are always looking for ways to provide and to assist, and are attentive to the details of the people around us (Truity, 2017). With my fiancé and I having different personality types, sometimes I find difficulties in our relationship, but then again with our two different perspectives we can collaborate, and the outcome could be amazing. In my relationship, I’m the one who always has everything in order, whereas he’s more of a ‘go with the flow” type of person. This is where we have the most problems. For example, I like to be ready ahead of time, and he will literally wait till the last minute to do anything, this drives me …show more content…
insane.
Although the Myer-Briggs type indicator is the world’s most popular personality test, there has been some weaknesses.
According to Inamura (2018)” the theory so deceptively simple that a certain subset of people believes themselves to be experts on the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator after two weeks of study or less. They fail to understand how an adequate understanding of the theory is needed to administer the test and interpret the scores”. According to Flow Psychology Blog (2014) one weakness of the Myer-Briggs type indicator is the time it takes, most people like for things to be quick and easy, but the Myer-Briggs type indicator takes more time then people like to spend doing a personality type quiz. Another weakness is, it doesn’t provide definite answers. The personality test can give you a pretty good estimate of what type you are, but it isn’t your final verdict. Also, some people feel that they could be a hybrid of different personalities and treating them as just a member of the type indicated in a test isn’t fair to
them.
Throughout the research I’ve done for the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator, I’ve learned my personality type. I now feel like I can really appreciate what I’ve learned. Learning my personality type was incredibly interesting, because it fits me perfect and I’m so excited to be able to say I know my personality type. I believe if I wouldn’t had done this research, I would’ve never thought about finding out my personality type. I feel like I can appreciate myself more now that I know, like it gives me a sense of assurance, and I like that.
