The Myth Of Mars And Venus By Deborah Cameron
In The Myth of Mars and Venus, Deborah Cameron explores the claims about gender and language and its consequences in today’s society. Cameron titles her book a ‘myth’ due to two reasons. The first sense is the commonly known definition of a myth: “a widespread but false belief” regarding the notion that men and women have different ways in using language to communicate with each other (Cameron, 3). ‘Myth’ is also used in the sense that it is a story of the identity of an individual and what has shaped them to become who they are.
Often, generalizations between men and women are formed through stereotypes and individual expectations. For example, women are widely stereotyped as being more talkative and emotional than men. However, there are

Stereotypes of women’s mental capability give rise to snap judgment that women are not as qualified as men for certain positions requiring what are presumed to be masculine attributes (e.g., intelligence, decisiveness, and logical reasoning skills). In general, stereotypes are tightly woven into social fabric of this culture, and reinforce dichotomies notions of “femininity” and “masculinity” (pg. 43). In the article, “I’m Not a Feminist, But…”: Popular Myths…

Perhaps one of the most prevalent, and yet widely unnoticed phenomena in society is that of gender stereotyping. It is prevalent in that it exists not only as a product of media, a cultivated image by a few, but also as common and subconscious characterizations developed in every individual. While it is both the blatant portrayals of iconic stereotypes on television and the stinging sexist remarks heard in everyday life that bring stereotyping to one’s attention, it is just as real and potent in the ways it falls under the radar.…

“Modern science has freed people’s consciousness from many myths, having shown them to be illusory and politically partisan. For instance, no one would now dare to claim that one race or nationality is superior to another, that a particular religion is the only true one, or that a certain political system is the only possible one. However, a number of stereotypes remain unchanged” (Kliuchko 16). These stereotypes are generalizations about gender attributes and the role of an individual, which authors use to describe and evaluate the behaviors of their characters. I’ll be comparing and contrasting gender stereotypes in “a sorrowful woman” by Gayle Godwin and “Separating” by John Updike. The division of labor according to gender leads to stereotypes that rationalize the division of labor. For example, because women disproportionately occupy roles that require nurturing behavior, people come to see women as a group as more nurturing. Men’s overrepresentation in positions of status and power leads to stereotypes of men as independent and agentic. Importantly, the consequences of gender stereotypes are not limited to the perception of others (Ryan et al 2004).…

The life of an artist stems from the originality of their art; however, sometimes the public does not understand or appreciate the art the artist dedicated wholeheartedly to. A Hunger Artist by Franz Kafka explored the ambition of an artist to achieve a feat no one had ever accomplished before, but instead of receiving admiration from the spectators the artist is faced with a cold response. The hunger artist used fasting as a form of artistic endeavor for his own liking, but the art is soon turned into a mode of entertainment just to please the public’s fascination, even though they do not appreciate the deeper meaning behind his art. Being the only one who could truly understand his art completely, the hunger artist is never satisfied and…

The ideology that one sex is superior to the other is called sexism. The presumption of male sexism led to patterns of prejudice and discrimination against women. These prejudices and discriminations have led to many beliefs or ideas of why women are inferior to men. They range from brain size to sexual differences, including personalities based on genitalia. Cross-cultural studies demonstrate how the socialization process and societal expectations of men and women produce variances in sex-role norms and behavior.…
