After leaning about each concept in Nursing 201 I have become more competent than before about the profession of nursing in areas such as evidence based practice, patient centered care and many other areas. I think after learning about patient centered care and the nurse-patient communication I am better prepared to interact with patients. Some things that I find to be especially helpful are to not ask close-ended questions or anything that will result in a simple yes or no, use general leads, use silence and to paraphrase and reflect what the patient says.…
In hospitals, especially emergency rooms and intensive care units, nurses encounter many critically ill patients. “One-fifth of the patients cared for by critical care nurses die in the intensive care unit” (Browning, 144), when these patients are nearing the end of their lives there are many decisions that need to be made by the patient if they are able and their family. Healthcare workers are put under tremendous amounts of stress in these situations, especially when they disagree with what the current code status of their patient.…
This article, “Relationship between call light use and response time and inpatient falls in acute care settings”, focused on three main points of interest. The first was the use of call lights from inpatients and their families. The second was the nurses’ response time to the call light. Finally, the third was the amount of inpatient falls that occurred. The goal of the study was to determine whether the call light use rate and the average call light response time contributed to the fall and injurious fall rates in acute care settings. The study was conducted in a Michigan community hospital and used archived hospital data for analyses for the period from February 2007 to June 2008. The unit of analysis was unit-week. The results of the study were as follows: more calls for assistance were related to less fall-related harm, longer response time to call lights related to fewer total falls and less fall-related patient harm, and more call light use related to longer response times (3333). So, in conclusion, this study challenged the idea that call lights should be used less or responded to faster.…

The nursing shortage is a growing concern for the nation. The aging population is causing more demand for qualified healthcare professionals. At the same time, healthcare professionals are retiring faster than they can be replaced. This shortage of nursing professionals is causing more overtime work, which creates more nursing errors. Scholarships and grants are being awarded to students to try and generate more nursing professionals. Many facilities are offering tuition reimbursement incentives to help lure nursing professionals. Many facilities are also offering sign-on bonuses. These incentives show how serious the increasing need for qualified nursing professionals is becoming.…
