Poetry is a form of writing that lets people express themselves. Poems are typically short and sometimes rhyme. In other senses, they do not rhyme, but have a reasonably deep meaning. In the poem, "The Names", by Billy Collins, the title really caught my attention because I was surprised by the relationship between the title and the poem, my expectations about the connection were fulfilled, and the poem itself was extremely moving.

My expectations were fulfilled because the connection between the poem and the title are made very clear, once I read the poem. In the poem, it makes complete since as to what the title represents. For example, it states, "Names written in the pale sky. Names rising in the updraft amid building. Names silence in stone,"(32-34) meaning that the thought of those who died were everywhere. With my first thought on the title, I would not have thought that the poem would have been so impacting. I thought that "The Names" would have just been about a ton of names that someone randomly saw, or about how strange names are, or even how people have come up with the names that we have. I am thankful that the meanings are deep and have a definite connection with such an awful time that has happened in our history. I like how the connection is meaningful. I think that the poem will really touch people's lives. I believe that the poem will make people remember how depressing the event was. It says in the poem that an "Alphabet of names in a green field."(49) meaning that there are many different people that were involved with what
