The Namesake

A Bengali girl named Ashima partakes in a marriage arranged to Ashoke Ganguli. After the ceremony the new couple left India to move to the United States where Ashoke has started to build a new life. They were going to face the cultural differences together, as one. For Ashima, this was difficult. Her new husband had to earn a living to support the two of them so she often found herself home alone. Not knowing the English language or culture at that became very depressing for her she felt lonely and lost. After a while the couple gave birth to a baby boy. Ashoke makes the decision to call his newborn, Gogol, after a Russian author. Later his American name becomes Nicky. The happy parents later give birth to Sonia, who later grows up to be an extremely independent girl. Sonia was born and raised in America, so she only knows the American ways. She gets frustrated when her family from India is forcing marriage upon her at such a young age. She moves down to California to lead an independent life.
The family took a trip to India, which inspired Gogol to want to become an architect. While going through school to reach this career goal Gogol meets the typical all American girl named Maxine. Her family is extremely wealthy and generous. Gogol feels extremely welcome and becomes more like family with Maxine and her parents. Since Gogol is wrapped up in his American relationship he is distancing himself from his own home and culture. While Gogol is wrapped up in his relationship and his carrier his father unexpectedly passes away while on a business trip in Ohio. The death of Gogols father was tremendously difficult for Gogol to handle. He had been pushing away his Indian culture for so many years and the passing of his father drastically drew him in closer when all his famlily came together to recognize he death of Ashoke. Maxine tried to understand Gogols feelings and help him through the mourning, but Gogol made it

    | One of the main themes in this story is pressure. Throughout the story Gogol feels pressured by his parents to follow the Bengali culture, to marry a Bengali girl, to eat Bengali food and to live the Bengali lifestyle. Myself being of the South Asian decent, I can relate to Gogol as well. My parents expect me to marry a Sri Lankan boy because they believe a Sri Lankan boy can make me happy. They also want to continue to pass down our culture to newer generations. This quote foreshadows the breakup that is going to happen between Gogol and Moushumi because you can tell Moushumi isn’t happy with the life she lives with Gogol. Gogol is pressured by his mother to ask out Moushumi a Bengali girl. They end up getting married but as they spend more and more days together through individuation Moushumi realises that she is not happy and this is because she was pressured into marrying a Bengali. She made herself believe her and Gogol had a lot in common and that they had a good time with each other, but deep down inside she only married him because it was what her parents wished for (her to marry a Bengali man). It develops the plot because as she begins to compare Gogol to Graham she realises she isn’t satisfied and starts to cheat on her husband. Bengali parents ideology is that culture guides you in life, it helps find your place. Throughout the story Moushumi puts on a persona of being a happy wife, who is loyal to her husband. But she is really sad about her relationship with Gogol and she transgresses by cheating on him with a former friend. Cheating on Gogol was a good move for Moushumi because this is what helps her realise that she…

In this chapter, Gogol tries to hold onto his father as he relives days with his father’s mindset, fulfill the duties that were once done by him, and reflecting over the memories they once shared. For instance, the text states, “...each of them assumes a task his father normally done...It is a view his father would have appreciated...Will you remember this day, Gogol?” (182,185,187). This reveals that despite how it appeared as if Gogol lacked regard for his father in previous chapters, the event of Ashoke’s passing slowly overcomes him with grief and causes Gogol to return to his roots of his parents, where it teaches him that avoiding his identity is inevitable.…

The film I have chosen is “The Namesake” by Jhumpra Lahiri. A traditional Bengali Indian family, the Ganguli’s, are moving to New England and are trying to stay engulfed in their unique cultural identity. Ashoke Ganguli brings his new wife, Ashima, to a strange new world, leaving her lonely and confused of a culture outside of her own. Ashima needs to learn to love a man she does not know, to customize herself to a country she is unfamiliar with, and to hold true to her values in a culture foreign to her traditional beliefs. In this paper I will inform the reader of the Family structure, social class on gender as well as material culture and nonmaterial culture pertaining to the Ganguli’s and how they made a place in American society. I will also show you two different sides to view this movie from, Symbolic interactionist and how it relates to this movies identity as well as the Functionalist perspective and its objectivity (Cherlin 03) on material impacting this story.…

Now I’d like to pass on the theme and ideas of the story. The leading theme of the story is connected with family relationships. There are several ideas in the story which help us to discover meaning of the story. Firstly, The American lady doesn’t even try to understand her daughter’s desire to marry the foreigner as for American women “Americans make best husbands”, she is too self-imposed. Secondly, the idea of semi-national marriage sounds absurdly, as the author shows us a perfect example of bad relationships between the American husband and wife, who are intended to divorce.…
