The Namesake
In the book The Namesake, there is a boy named Gogol Ganguli. Gogol’s name is very different compared to everyone else and he has struggles with having a different/unique name. When I first started reading the book in class, Gogol’s name really stuck out to me. The reason being because of how unique it was. I feel bad about how Gogol had struggles with his name because I felt that everyone should love their name, no matter what anyone else thinks about it. Now, I don’t personally have a different/unique first name such as Gogol, but my middle and first name are different compared to anyone else.
My full name is Elijah Aukaiholohohonuloa Ohai. My first name, Elijah, was given to me by my parents. They knew that they were going to be giving birth to a boy and so they really liked the name Elijah. They told me that they didn’t have any other options to choose between because they liked Elijah so much. My parents got the name Elijah after the prophet in the bible. Now I know that the name Elijah isn’t a very unique or uncommon name but the thing is, I only know three other

The name Ohai comes from an ancestor whose name was Kekauamokuohai. The word Kekauamokuohai means The Battle of Mokuohai. This battle of Mokuohai was fought on the island of Hawaii, in the year 1782. This battle was in the early days during Kamehameha I’s wars when he was trying to conquer the many different Hawaiian islands. I really love my last name because of how unique it is. The crazy thing about my last name is that if you know anyone that has the last name Ohai, they are definitely related to me and the rest of my family. There is no other person (who isn’t realated) that has the last name Ohai. So just remember, if you ever meet anyone in your lifetime that has the last name Ohai, they are related to me in some type of way. I like that I am a guy because then when I get married, I won’t have to worry about me getting/changing my last name from Ohai to something

Hi, Mrs. Kneisley! You already know who I am because I was in your class last year. My full name is Ameera Aisha Law. Both my first and middle name is an islamic name. My parents wanted me to have a religious and a meaningful name so they gave me my first name, Ameera, and my middle name, Aisha. Ameera means princess while Aisha means life, vivaciousness, and prosperous. I absolutely love my name because it’s awesome(in my opinion.) It is also very unique since Ameera and Aisha are very uncommon in the US. My last name that I got from my dad isn’t a muslim name, but I still love it. Plus, Law sounds too cool to give up. My friends like to joke with my last name saying, “Ameera is the LAW, her words are absolute.” It cracks me up all the time…

At their core, surnames are crucial for society to properly function. In early times, mankind thought up last names and employed them to differentiate between people, a use we still have for them today. They could be descriptive, such as Miller for a person who worked in a mill, or patronymic. Patronymic surnames were created based on a person’s father or grandfather. For example, a man with a father named Richard may have a surname of Richardson (Richard’s son). If that man’s name was John, his son might get the last name Johnson (John’s son), and so on and so forth, changing between generations of a family. These new inventions greatly…

How many uncomfortable situations would I avoid by changing it, or scraping it off of my life once and for all. I guess it would make a substantial 180 degree turn in my life, but I would rather get interrogated a thousand times than change my last name. Aside from being something I was immediately born with, it is one of the few things that define me as an individual. Though not many look at it my way, I proudly hold on to it due to the enormous significance it holds. This word is a synonym for family and unity, which is the foundation of everything around me. With this, being content is the most important aspect a person has to focus on. Personally, my family brings joyfulness into my heart and is the one that can push me away from darkness. They are the building blocks who have helped me grow and stood by me since I was first born. Metaphorically speaking, my last name is the honorable representation of who I am as a person and the relationship I have with the people around me. So, why would I give up something so precious for the avoidance of something so…

I was supposed to be named Rachel. It was a compromise, my mother told me, from what my dad had picked: Raquel. Growing up, I had a friend named Rachel that was nothing like me: soft, composed, and the sweetest smile. As it is hebrew, the name comes from the biblical name meaning “O Beautiful One” or “female sheep”. While this is nice and all, it was much more fitting for my friend. Never could or would I pick the animal the sheep to describe myself.…

My first name, “Nia,” has multiple origins. In languages such as Welsh, Irish, and Celtic, it means “brightness” and is in the top 100 names in England and Wales. The folk tale behind the name Nia in Ireland was of a fairy named Niamh who had been one of the first to inhabit Ireland and was said to be beautiful and golden-haired. The African meaning of my name, however, is the meaning I’ve always held close to my heart. My family didn’t look at the origins or meaning of my name when they named me. About a month after I had been born, my family came to find out about the Swahili origin of my name meaning “purpose.” Before my parents knew my gender, they thought I was going to be a boy and would’ve named me Ian. When they knew I was to be a girl,…

Are there many things you want to know about my name? Well, my birth name is Qui, but many people call me Florence. I like my name for many reasons. One reason I like my name is that it is very unique and I haven’t yet met a person with the same name as me. I dislike my name for many reasons. One reason I dislike my name is because, in school it is the name my parents put on my forms and everything, so that is what goes in the records of the schools and all the teachers don’t know how to pronounce Qui, so I don’t really like it. I have had many past experiences with my name. One past experience I had with my name is every time it comes to the beginning of the school year all the teachers don’t know how to pronounce my name, so they spell it out or something like that, it always bugged me but then eventually I got used to it because not everyone is Vietnamese.…

    Origin of My Name

ASSIGNMENT: Write an essay explaining the origin of your name and how you feel about it. My full name is Saidah Lauren Belo-Osagie. My name is definitely different from the average Joe’s, but it’s special because I know that even though it’s hard to pronounce, people will say, “Hey, you’re the girl with the hard to remember name.” And that’s okay. That’s because I know that my name means something special: Joy. My parents named me Saidah because they believed that I would bring joy and pleasure to the family, especially because right when I was born, a dove came to my window. That was definitely a good sign. The origin of my name comes from the Muslims. I’m not Muslim, and neither is my immediate family. But for some reason, my paternal grandpa was Muslim, for there were many Muslims in Nigeria. They insisted my name be Muslim even though that’s not what my mother had in mind. She wanted to name me Jasmine, a nice, pretty name. Even though I would like the name Jasmine, it was a common name. I need a somewhat peculiar name for a somewhat peculiar girl like me. People usually ask me what I feel about my name because it is so different, but I personally like it. At first I thought it was uncanny and bizarre, and I’d often ask my mom why it wasn’t something that everyone knew. But, of course, my name defines who I am, and I shouldn’t be ashamed of it. Several times, people would ask me what my name was, and when I said it was Saidah, they thought it was a pretty name. That made me feel much less insecure about my name. SAIDAH BELO-OSAGIE Seventh Grade One of the most intriguing subjects in the world is names. What do our names mean? Couldn’t we have had a different name? My first name, Miranda, was given to me in honor of a character from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In this play, my namesake is the daughter of a magician who was once a duke but who was betrayed by his brother and abandoned on an island inhabited by spirits. I used to hate my name, but now I am…
