The Namesake Belonging
“Some people claim that a person’s cultural identity is the foundation or groundwork on which every other aspect of their being is built” (No Bullying). That describes exactly what Gogol in the novel, The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri is trying to discover about himself through his name. Almost every aspect of this novel have to do with Gogol and his journey with his companions and family to find his sense of belonging through his culture. Lahiri uses the manipulation of time in this novel in order to positively accentuate one's process and struggles of discovering their true cultural identity. Throughout the novel, the author seems to accelerate time when Gogol’s life is not impacted with problems, but she suspends time when he faces conflict …show more content…
This occurs when Gogol's father, Ashoke, process the readers with a flashback of his experience of the train accident. That flashback was necessary due to the fact that it shows the background story of how Gogol received his name. This is very similar to the television show, Once Upon A Time, since they provide past insight in order to explain the event that is occurring currently, as they switch back and forth between the sequence of events. That type of time manipulation is significant because his constant struggle with his true self identity is all rooted from his name. As a final point, Lahiri’s sequence of time in this novel greatly influenced how Gogol's gourmet with discovering his true cultural identity is perceived. 1986. Some works of literature use the element of time in a distinct way. The chronological sequence of events may be altered, or time may be suspended or accelerated. Choose a novel, an epic, or a play of recognized literary merit and show how the author's manipulation of time contributes to the effectiveness of the work as a whole. There are times in individual’s lives when sudden realisations may alter their perception of themselves and their place in the world. The place, context and setting in significant moments in time throughout individual’s lives cause such realisations occur. This can be seen in both the novels “The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri and “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Remarque, through the experiences of their characters Paul, Gogol and Ashima. Paul is confronted by his experiences on the front line, where his kinship between his fellow comrades have entrenched him from his own family and society. Likewise, those significant moments partaken by Gogol and Ashima, school excursions and getting a job, have both caused social disturbance and an increased recognition of one’s identity.…

The pressure for second generation immigrants to assimilate in all ways to the culture of the country in which they were born is a significant factor in the formation of a person’s identity. Intercultural romantic relationships are also used as a defense mechanism to avoid fully participating in the traditions of a person’s culture as noted by Gogol and Michelle’s relationship. Intercultural romantic relationships can also awaken a person to their insecurities in their identity, as shown with Alice and Michael’s relationship. The significance of a name is also discussed as a symptom of identity crises such as with Gogol’s change of his name to something “more American”. A name is also evidence of a cross-cultural identity as with Alice, who is called Agheare by her family but Alice by the wider…

Changing of the tense in each stanza, explains a change in time and train of thought, as from the childhood past and the present thought. Harwood’s ability to establish language that moves ‘from the present to the past tense, but also brings the past back to life’ are continually bringing us ‘back to the shadow of death, standing over the passing of time’ as Professor Stephanie Trigg explains in her book, Gwen Harwood1. Time is notably displayed within the poems, ‘At Mornington’ and…

We all have flaws and insecurities that continue to linger amount us in our lives. What we sometimes tend to forget is with the discrepancies we dwell on, they may very well give us strength and become a positive feature in the long run. Throughout this novel, you see many themes of friendship, love, hate, and war. However, I believe this novel articulates an underlying theme of the struggle between encompassing the power of being different versus the agony and pain of it in societal structures such as Burgdorf. Hegi shows many instances where Trudi’s difference goes beyond her physical difference of being a Zwerg, but also noting her intellectual difference. It is because Trudi’s life has shaped her and has made her unique. Ultimately, the benefit outweighs the tragedy.…

Throughout the novel, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, the character Gogol changes in many different ways. One of the most apparent changes was in his "Indian ness". By "Indian ness" I mean the amount of his parents Bengali ways and traditions that he retained. While growing up he did everything in his power while growing up to stray away from his parents' Bengali ways. Gogol spent most of his life trying to differ from his parents, however in the end he ends up obeying their wishes as to who he marries. As he was growing up Gogol felt only embarrassment and shame because of his background and because his parents did things differently than his other American friends' parents. For example, unlike his American friends, while in college Gogol had to return home every other weekend to accompany his parents to their Bengali friends' parties. Throughout his life he tried to shed his parent's un-American lifestyle but in the end he succumbed to his past and ancestry.…

In the beginning of the story, the narrator is nothing more than a curious child on vacation. As time goes on he is soon to find the realization that life is no longer the same. No longer is the narrator a child but is now and adult and gains the responsibility of being a father. In shock and curiosity of where the time has gone, he soon finds himself back at the scene he remembered as a child. His curiosity is evident in the quote "I wondered how time would have marred this unique, this holy spot". Shortly after arrival however, he finds that time has not changed the setting as much as he would have thought. This is evident in his quote "when I got back there with my boy, and we settled into a camp... I could tell it was pretty much going to be the same thing as before". The narrator notices some slight changes on the way such as technological advances and changes in the soda that goes around but not anything significant. The real change is encompassed in the fact that he is no longer playing the role of the child, but is now playing the role of the father. It is an eye opening event when he realizes that he is almost reliving his experiences through his son's.…

I chose this quote because it is based around music and that makes me understand it better. Yo-Yo-Ma is also a famous American musician witch I have heard of before. In the quote, he compares different types of music with different type of people. That everyone has their own type of music with different rhythm, life, language and heritage and that you need to learn how to be more open and adaptive to the world around us .…

In the novels, “The Nose”, and The Metamorphosis Gogol, and Kafka demonstrates how identity does not depend on what society depicts you to be, it’s whatever you (as a sole proprietor of your life) decide what and who you are, they both portray this idea by transforming their protagonists into what society sought them to be, to see how they would react. In response to this idealistic concept the authors use their protagonists to convey this “Hidden” concept by putting them through a situation in which, it causes them to see what society really sees them as. Continuing on this concept the authors imply that the protagonist’s transformations directly correspond to their identities.…
