Nature and expansionism greatly shaped the American identity during the Romantic era by showing that America would do what it took to expand and grow, even if it meant treating the natives poorly, as well as artists and authors creating an idealistic and worldly focus on nature as illustrated in Thomas Cole’s Falls of the Kaaterskill and Emmerson’s Nature. During Andrew Jackson’s presidency, America was undergoing a rapid expansion out west which meant there was a possibility to grow the economy immensely, but the natives were ultimately in the way of it. Jackson valued the growth of America over treating the Indians with kindness which is reflected when he says “What good man would prefer a country covered with forests and ranged by a few thousand savages to our extensive Republic…”…

    Nature In Into The Wild

The film Into The Wild directed by Sean Penn consists in the journey of a young guy called Chris McCandless, a 23 year old who shows us from his point of view just how manipulated society is, based on silly rules and behaviours where studying, getting a job and material things are a priority. Therefore Chris decided to escape from this society to live into the wild, surrounded by nature as is the place where he feels comfortable. Undoubtedly one of the main aims of the film is the contrast between society and nature. To achieve this, the director uses different techniques such as the setting the more important one, lighting, camera angles, sound effects among others, which also help us to the understanding of the characters linking us to their feelings and behaviours.…

There are two conflicting views on human nature. Chinese scholar Hsun Tzu believed that man’s nature is evil and when man acts “good” it is only the result of what he called “conscious activity.” In the text, he describes conscious activity as “the part [of man] that can be acquired by learning and brought to completion by effort.” In other words, Hsun Tzu believed that man is naturally selfish, and that unless there are rules and principles put in place to guide men away from his natural inclinations, society would disintegrate into chaos and violence. Mencius, another Chinese scholar and fellow student of Confucius, believed the opposite. He thought that human nature is ultimately good and that people learn to be evil from various influences and experiences in their life.…

In the course of my archive research I was helped by the British Institute in East Africa, and its former Director Dr John Sutton, and assistant Director, Dr Shane Doyle. I am especially grateful to Shane Doyle for his help, hospitality and humour. In Ethiopia at the University of Addis Ababa I was able to use the excellent resources of the Library of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. My work here was much aided by the co-operation of the Director of the Institute and its excellent staff. Members of the History Department were also helpful; in particular I should mention the help and hospitality of Dr Merid Wolde Aregay, Belete Bezuneh and Makonnen Tegegn. Tim Carmichael afforded me a great deal of professional assistance and advice…

Rebecca stands as a perfect example of modern gothic literature. Gothic fiction can be characterized by vivid settings, an atmosphere of mystery, terror, violence and the supernatural. The book encompasses a murder, a terrible fire, and features a sinister servant; finally, the entire story is pervaded by the unrestful ghost of Rebecca herself. The novel also exemplifies the typical gothic novel by the use of weather and nature as a motif.…

In the film, man and nature were portrayed in a way which depicted co-existence equality. There was no clear distinction showing that one is superior to the other. Throughout the film, there was a constant interaction between the characters and nature. (SUSS, 2017) The images of granny working in agricultural fields, Mei playing with the tadpoles and getting dirty, their house being surrounded by climbers, tree tunnels and untamed wilderness work as reminders to remind us of the time when man and nature were inter-dependent. They worked together to sustain eco-relationship and to seek protection for the country and its people from the nature spirits. (Yuen, 2012)…

Nature can bring a lot of beauty into our lives. Nature has a way of affecting our moods and it can force us to change our plans. Nature is responsible for the sun, clouds, rain, and snow. When it is sunny and bright outside, we feel cheerful inside. When it is cloudy and rainy, we often feel gloomy. When there is a beautiful and starry night, the moonlight makes us feel romantic.…
