The Necklace

The short story titled "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant is a story of deep sympathetic connection with Mathilde, as she struggles with the true cost of wealth after losing the necklace her friend lent her during the party. Guy de Maupassant illustrates his understanding of wealth as merely an aesthetic part of a person is seen emphasized inside Mathilde's struggles, and we see that the conflict of the story arises from the mere ungratefulness displayed by the main character. The story presses the idea that material wealth does not describe who you are, and this is seen through the historical and the cultural context taking effect during that time period, the mind sets of the characters, and the symbolisms embedded in the story.

During that time women were always home, they didn't work, but society always looked at them based on their beauty, their wealth, and in the story the line "With them, beauty, grace, and charm take place of birth and breeding." show the purpose of women during their time. Women were also looking for parties to attend to , and would thrive on compliments, adoration, and attention ("with distinguished and sought after men whose attention all women longed for"), and with an upbringing of a rich and distinguished family, if one or more luxuries would be removed, what more would Mathilde react to the smallest inconveniences in her apartment and her lifestyle? Given these circumstances, after she got married with the minor clerk, she would always be unhappy, ungrateful, and desperate for high class
