The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant and the song Royals by Lorde: What They Symbolize

The Necklace and The song Royals The short story “The Necklace,” by Guy de Maupassant, and the song “Royals,” by Lorde, symbolizes class, and how it can ruin someone’s life. In the short story The Necklace, by Guy de Maupassant reveals the relationship between a husband, and a wife, and how a single necklace ruins their life because of Mathilde’s class. The story starts off by a young woman named Mathilde Loisel getting an invitation to a fancy party, but she had nothing to wear, so she cries to her husband telling him to give the invitation to someone who is prettier and actually has something nice, and fancy to wear. Mathilde, and Monsieur her husband were a poor family they couldn’t afford anything expensive. So then Monsieur stood there, and asked her how much did she need for a beautiful, but not an expensive dress. Mathilde stops, and thinks for a while, and she comes up with at least four-hundred francs. Monsieur was shocked because that’s how much he had put aside to buy a rifle, so that he could go hunting the following summer near Nanterre with a few friends who went shooting larks around there on Sundays. However, he said: “Well all right, then. I’ll give you four hundred francs”. The story The Necklace symbolizes class because Mathilde was the type that wanted nice things, and not caring for her husband, but at the end of the story Mathilde loses the necklace, and has to try to find a way to get it back. But she falls in to debt for ten years until she had paid off the necklace that she had lost. After she got the necklace she took it to her friend Madame Forestier and she said that the necklace that she had given Mathilde was a fake.

The song Royals by Lorde, Lorde uses symbolism in “Royals” to communicate the songs central message about class, and how there are different groups of people for example the lower class, middle class, and high class. In the song Royals, - Lorde explains all of that. Lorde is sending a message to the audience, or the listeners to let them know that nobody can control you, and every human that is on Earth are all the same, and also there is no difference in people. Every human being is the same. In the sentence “And we’ll, never be royals. It don’t run in our blood”. Lorde is trying to explain that we don’t want to be looked down at. We want to have equal rights as the upper classes have. I personally prefer the short story The Necklace because I understand it more than the song. Also the story has more information than the song. I think Mrs. Loisel had more information on her like for example she wanted a nice dress really badly, and when she got it she wanted a nice fine jewelry, and I believe my symbolism fits in more with Mrs. Loisel. Also I had more things to write on the story The Necklace than the song Royals. In the story it ends with Mrs. Loisel finding out that the necklace was a fake and that her, and her husband had to spend ten years in hell trying to pay off their debt. In the song, Lorde wants her dream not to be some fantasy, but for it to come true. No I don’t prefer one ending to the other. The nineteenth century story was written better than the twenty-first century song. Having class doesn’t matter if you’re on the bottom or top everyone is the same there is no difference.
