The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant

In Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Necklace,” Madame Loisel, a poor woman who has always wished to be like the others, is going to a ball. She protests that she needs the perfect dress. While finding the perfect dress, her husband searches up and down for the money to afford what his wife wants. Once the perfect dress was found, something was missing, her jewelry! She wasn’t one to own jewelry although she knew the perfect person. She would ask her friend! Her friend owned a piece for everyone. Picking the perfect one out was hard for Madame but she finally found the perfect one. A diamond necklace. While at the ball everyone was amazed, she looked amazing! Every gentleman surrounded her and she was so happy. But her happy soul didn’t last for too long. When she noticed that the prized piece was no longer on her neck, she was a reck. Searching high and low until there was no other choice than to buy a replacement. Saving, borrowing, and draining money, they finally had enough. This was a big “mountain” that they had to get over through the years. The song, “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus relates to the book because it describes the troubles that the artist and Mme. Loisel are both going through.
