The Necklace Change

In the story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, the society affects towards the characters that brought out different traits and actions. The character Mathilde Loisel experiences a change, effect towards the being of society. She fantasizes, experienced, and underwent as she was given a chance at something better. As she makes one mistake, effects of society take a toll on her as she experienced hardships, and a decreasing of her life style. Different points will be discussed such as how this character was viewed, how the character viewed herself, and how the society changed her. In of 1884 France, rank and social class played a major role in categorizing people such as being lower, middle, or higher class. Understanding the different changes that Mathilde endured highly from different social classes. The main conflict of losing the necklace made her face years of poverty just to pay off every loan they had borrowed. Through the time of paying of the loans, her and her husband steeped lower to the class of poverty as “Mrs. Loisel soon discovered the horrible life of the needy” (Maupassant). Though who ranking decreased, work ethic enhanced to fit the needs of the lower class. She begin to become hard working as “She learned to do the heavy housework, dirty kitchen jobs” (Maupassant). In a way, the social downgrade impacted the value that made her hopeful of her dreams and desires of being rich, her ravishing looks. Through the lower social class, she “looked old now. She had become the strong, hard, and rude woman of poor households” (Maupassant). She made herself look weak, yet she made herself look strong.
