In the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, a father and son struggle to repair a relationship broken by mutual distrust. In this novel, trust is broken in several situations. First, trust is broken when Christopher's father hides his mom's notes and admits he killed Wellington the dog. Trust is broken by Christopher when he runs off to London to live with his mom. Both Christopher and his father value their relationship with each other and when each of their trust is broken by the other, they work hard to rebuild their father-son relationship.

Christopher and his father's trust relies on predictability and knowing what the other is going to do next. Towards the middle of the book, the reader is introduced to one of the conflicts of this story which is when Christopher not only finds out that his father has been lying to him about his mother being dead, but he also learns that his father actually killed Wellington, the dog. Christopher has been writing a book in which he tries to solve the mystery of who killed a dog named Wellington. However, Christopher's father does not want Christopher to get involved in other people's business so he takes Christopher's book and hides it. While attempting to find the hidden book, Christopher stumbles upon a box of notes from his “dead mom”. “It was an envelope addressed to me I picked it up. It had never been opened. Then I noticed that there were lots of other envelopes and they were all addressed to me. And this was interesting and confusing.” It was at this moment in time that Christopher begins to lose trust in his father. However, while his father tries to regain Christopher’s trust after this lie, his father goes on to share another lie with Christopher which results in a greater loss of trust. Christopher's father says “You have to know that I am going to tell you the truth from now on. About everything. Because. . . if you don't tell the truth now, then later on. . . later on it hurts even more. So. . . I killed Wellington, Christopher."
