This paper will explain the origins of the Muses, The type of art each inspires, and each muse in detail. The nine muses were: Calliope, Clio, Thalia, Melopomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Euterpe, Polyhymna, and Urania. The muses inspire poetry, music, and science. The nine muses were the daughters of Zeus, the lightning god, and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. According to greekmythology.com Zeus slept with Mnemosyne for nine days resulting in the birth of the nine Muses. Mnemosyne gave the babies to Apollo and Eurifme. Apollo, the god of music, raised them in the way of arts. When they grew up they wanted to dedicate their work to the arts. Clio was also called the proclaimer because she liked telling stories of the past. Clio is the second oldest muse and her symbols were scrolls or stone tablets.
Thalia is the protector of comedy and her symbol is a theatrical comedy mask. Thalia discovered comedy, geometry, architectural science, and agriculture. She also was the protector of Symposiums: conferences or meetings that discuss a particular subject. Thalia was a source of inspiration to poets, and dramatists.
Erato is the protector of lyrics and love poetry. A Lyric or Love poem would usually start with asking help from the Muse Erato. Her symbols were lyre, love arrows, and bows. Her name originates from the Greek word “Eros” that means the feeling of love.
