The Normal Heart Summary
The article talks about why the Black Lives Matter movement is an LGBT issue. It talks about how queer and trans people of color are disregarded, disrespected and abused; ironically even within the LGBT community. One instance of this would be the hostile, complacent and apathetic response towards the mourning queer and trans POC’s who peacefully protested bars in the Castro area of San Francisco. The interesting thing is that it is supposed to be an LGBT-friendly area but when people of color in the community speak up or are threatened, it turns hateful; cis, white, gay men screaming, “No one cares”.     The lasting legacy of the Stonewall Riots can be seen in the annual parade that began in 1970 as the Christopher Street Liberation Day March. The Parade, which was held one year after the riots, celebrates the historical event with thousands of gay citizens around the country. On June 29, 1970 the NY Times published an article calling the congregation a “protest rally”. The article estimates that between 2,000 and 20,000 activists filled Greenwich Village and Central Park.     In the summer of 1969, Greenwich Village in New York erupted into protest against police raids on gay bars and establishments. The protests began with the raiding of the popular establishment The Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall riots proved pivotal in the gay rights movement, as the Sixties and Seventies marked the rise of queers rights activist groups that fought for equality through political means.
