The Nursing profession was first started in 300 AD in the Roman Empire. “It was during this time that the Empire sought to place a hospital within every town under its rule. As such, there were many “nurses” during that time that assisted in in-patient medical care within the newly created hospitals, alongside doctors” (Sayles). During this time modern medicine was not around like it is today, so there was a lot of people who were sick and dying. They were in need of Nurses to take care of them. Even though nursing started in 300 AD it became more important in Europe during the middle ages. “Hospitals functioned in a myriad of ways, housing lepers and refugees among the typical sick and injured patients. It was due to this that a nurse’s role within the hospital involved a wider range of duties than may be seen today”(Sayles). The history of Nursing is what shaped modern Nursing today. During the Crimean War in the 1850s many people were getting injured on the battlefield , and because of the lack of hygiene many people died because there wounds got infected. Nurses perform many different tasks during the average work day whether they work in hospitals, nursing homes,hospice care, or assisted living. For example, “Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members”(Krueger). Nursing is a round the clock job, some nurses work 24 hours even on holidays. Some examples of jobs nurses perform are they record medical histories and symptoms, give medicine, set up patient care plans, observe and record observations, work alongside doctors, watch and use medical equipment, perform diagnostic tests, teach patients and families how to deal with injury or sickness, and make sure the patient knows how to take care of himself or have family take care of him while being at home. Nursing is a really big job, so to make sure all the nurses know and have extensive training on what to do the education takes a long time. “BSN programs typically take 4 years to complete;ADN and diploma programs usually take 2 to 3 years to complete.
