In “The Old Man and the Sea”, Ernest Hemingway identifies the old fisherman Santiago as an individual who is independent in all his actions, and is willing to take chances in life. Santiago had gone 84 days without catching a fish, but despite him being “salao” he doesn’t lose hope in himself. He’s finally able to catch a fish known as a marlin, but is too scared to pull it up, since it may cause the string to snap. So he decides to let the fish pull him and the boat. In the end he was finally able to get the fish but by the time he gets back to town all that’s left of the fish is his carcass. This story brings to us a message that helps us identify ourselves. We all go through battles and obstacles in life but it is our decision if we choose to overcome them.In able for Santiago to overcome his obstacles he shoes to us he is confident by not giving up. Even though he had no luck the first 84 days he still chose to go on the 85th day. On the 85th day he was finally able to get a fish and thought to himself and said “let him think that I am more man than I am and I will be so”. If we are confident that we can achieve something we will do whatever is in our disposition to make it happen. Being confident helps us discover if were right or if we’re not throughout life. We may sometimes not be right but if we think we are and we stick to that decision it will eventually help us in the long run.Santiago also lets us know he won’t give up until he has finally caught the fish. For example, there’s a part in the story he says, “Fish, he said softly aloud, “I’ll stay with you until I am dead.” It’s an example for us to realize that he might have been very old but giving up was not in his vocabulary. We should never give up, because it may be difficult to get things in life but if we choose to not give up that will take us very far. Yeah, we might get thrown many curveballs, but whether we choose to swing the ball or walk back to the bench is
