The Old Man And The Sea Analysis
Mohamed Alasow
English 11 analysis 5/16/14 the old man and the sea Analysis There was an old man who for quite some time wasn’t able to catch any fish.
The old man was grumpy. He was never happy always complaining how he would never again catch any fish. He had never had a smile on his face even when almost caught A BIG FISH!.He should’ve been happy i know i would because catching a fish is like a prize you worked hard for you should be happy. He also had weird fishing techniques that were the reason why he barely caught any fish. The old man was grumpy everyday. In the story the little boy asks: Santiago can i go and get sardines for you tommorow santiago the old man replies “ No, Go and play baseball i can still row and rogelio will throw the net.”In Another Part of the story . For example,
"It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty." And most powerfully, "The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat" The first Example shows that the old man was grumpy because he was grouchy at the kid, the second example shows that he was grumpy because of his equipment. the Second point is how he never caught fish for quite some time
The first sentence of the book announces itself as Hemingway's: "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish" the point here is eighty four days without fish, why shouldn't he be grumpy.

The Third Point Was How His fishing techniques were bad.

in the story He tries to pull the fish in put the moves away which the old man cuts his hand

The Conclusion
We can agree on that the old man was unlucky for not catching fish for about 84 days. this Story was quite interesting but the old man he was never happy

I almost fell right out of the canoe I was so startled. I casted my line right where I heard the splash and not ten seconds after, I saw a fish jump right out of the water and take my fly. It tug so hard the whole way i was reeling it in and i thought it was going to break but luckily I was able to get the fish to the boat. It was the biggest fish i’ve ever caught and even seen in real life. My dad tried to take a picture of my catch, before he could get the camera out, the fish slipped out of my hand and plopped into the water. That whole night was filled with fishing. I caught at least a dozen more, while my dad only caught three. On our way back to the cabin I told my dad,”That was seriously funny that i caught more fish than you and you’ve been here many more times than I have.”…

Ernest Hermingway’s novella, The Old Man and The Sea characterizes Santiago as an old man who is going it alone from struggling against defeat. In the opening paragraph, Santiago has been without fish for 84 days, and will soon pass his own record of 87 days. Almost as a reminder of Santiago’s struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles “the flag of permanent defeat”.…

In the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech Sal’s father accuses Sal of “trying to catch fish in the air” (pg. 75) because she was trying to get her father to stop seeing Mrs. Cadaver to get her mother to come back. The author uses this idiom to show that Sal is doing something that is a waste of time because it is impossible to catch fish from the air and it is impossible for Sal’s mother to come back. There have been times in my life when I have tried to do something that turned out to be impossible. For example, yesterday I went to the Oktoberfest in Yorba Linda and there was a silent auction. There was a specific item up for bid that I really wanted. It was a one week rental for a fancy house with eight bedrooms and an ocean view…

He fished for a living, to keep his wife happy, but he was never truly a fisherman. He did not enjoy fishing like the rest of his wife’s family did. His skin was not tough enough as “the salt water irritated his skin as it had for sixty years…and his arms, especially the left, broke out into the oozing saltwater boils”. (paragraph 60) The sun and wind took a toll on his body that the others did not experience. To him, the boat held emotions such as pain, despair and struggle. He would rather be inside, reading and learning, but was instead forced to…

Albert Hamilton Fish seemed to be a harmless man. He was a great father and husband and no one suspected he could be such a monster. When Santiago goes on his little adventure, he has to have perseverance to continue with his goal. During the day, the Old Man offered to himself that he “could drift, he thought, and sleep and put a bight of line around my toe to wake me. But today is eighty-five days and I should fish the day well’ (54). Even though Santiago knows that he could just relax for the day, he chooses to have a good day of fishing well. He would rather have a chance of catching a fish with hard work than to be at ease for the day. Santiago thinks to himself “What will I do if he decides to go down, I don’t know. What I’ll do if he sounds and dies I don’t know. But I’ll do something. There are plenty of things I can do” (78). Santiago is…

Page 10. “Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.” I think the mere fact that a man of his age is so unyielding in his decision to continue fishing proves his own resolute determination. He is obviously encumbered by a number of physical weaknesses that come with old age, and yet it is this cheerful and undeafeated look in his airs that propels his entire character to continue on with what he loves: fishing.…

“You’ll just be cold now and not hungry.” Everyone got settled in we got our poles set up with the right weights and lures. That proved to be quite difficult due the fact that our fingers hadn’t fully thawed yet. We dropped our lines into the water and hoped for the best especially with the luck we’ve had the past few years in the same general area. We fished for a while and didn’t get any bites so we added more weight to the lines so the bait would sink deeper and hopefully that would be where the fish were. We dropped our lines into the water and almost immediately my father had something on his line. He reeled in and the fish continued to fight. The fish came out of the water and flopped onto the ice above gasping for air. The monster he reeled in was a walleye no more than five inches long. “I didn’t know we were fishing for sharks.” I said…
