The Old Red Balloon Analysis
The first symbol in this story is the old red balloon. A red balloon typically means love and baby. In the first part last Nia (Bobby's girlfriend) has become pregnant and she meets with Bobby and hands him the red balloon. Bobby is shocked and can't believe that he got Nia pregnant and that she has a baby in her stomach. Bobby eventually has to explain it to their parents and he goes to his first. Bobby's mom is just sitting there and his dad is baling his eyes out. Then he goes to Nia's parents house and he basically lies about the whole situation and just keeps saying yes sir, yes mam.

The Basketball in first part last means Bobby's childhood and it reminds him of his friends that are now really not there because of Feather being born. He doesn't have the time to go and "ball" with his buddies or even hang out with them as Feather is his number one priority. The poem also talks about how a side kicks’ outward appearance is not perfect like a hero’s, but they don’t care or get jealous of a hero because they look up to them for support or guidance.
