I enjoyed reading your post. Another classmate chose this story as well. I had not heard of it before I read her post. You had mentioned that these types of crimes “rarely only hurt one person, but that multiple people get caught in this web”, this organizational deviance/crime also hurt numerous students and teachers. Barbara Byrd-Bennett accepted money in exchange for contracts. These contracts could have been done for less money leaving the excess money to be used for things that would benefit the students as well as help teachers. One teacher commented that according to Abc7chicago.com (2015), “I’m outraged and appalled by the fact that I spent several years trying to get text books and resources for my 12th grade students to get…

The book opens with a parable regarding mountains. Eli makes it well known that they are heavily disabled alongside various other identities. Using disability to represent himself, the parable of the mountain describes social class and structure as being a daunting mountain. Those at the top scream down to find a way up but it is almost impossible. Although individuals may begin the journey to the submit it quickly gets lonely. The individual has the option to continue climbing or return to their group. Even then that doesn’t account for hazards and changes in the path to the metaphorical summit. This metaphor sets up the remainder of the book brilliantly. Exile and Pride, following the mountain metaphor, is divided into two primary sections; home and bodies.…

It is a mixed blessing to be able to see the movie version of a popular book. In most cases, Hollywood veers from the text and the viewer is left with a watered down version of the original. In the case of the Princess Bride, the cinema version is very close to the book. One such scene is Inigo and Fezzik’s visit to Miracle Max in search of a miracle. Setting, conflict, and dialogue are three points of high congruency.…

The magnificent painting, The Ride of the Valkyries by William T. Maud (1890) displays the beauty and story of the Norse myth of The Valkyries. William uses many forms of archetypes in this piece. The two most notably being symbolism and character. Beginning with symbolism we see a multitude of representations. The raven in norse mythology is a bird of ill omen, a sign of death, and bad luck.…

The truth I discovered in The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, was based on love. The truth was a reality that many choose not to fulfill or live out, because of possibly discovering something new or different from what one was familiar to. William Goldman ends the book with a few strong sentences about love, and that “life is not fair, it’s just fairer than death” (358). And I saw truth in that sentence, because he was accepting the truth in life for what it was, and what it may be for many people. The truth to love and life is not a fairytale, or a story with a happy ending, but is based on accepting what is real and honest.…

Throughout history, the concept of fate has been a common theme among works of literature and man's thought in general. Does he have the ability to choose his path through life, or is his destiny laid out before him? This question takes on new meaning in modern society, as people try to make their own choices while conforming to the structure of society and its norms. While society, with its customs and laws, seems to limit a person's freedom, the person is still essentially free to make their own choices.…

The ideas conveyed by Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice and Fay Weldon in Letters to Alice on first reading Jane Austen conflict with and challenge the values of their contemporary society and serve to offer moral perspectives opposing to those of their respective societies. Connections can be made between the role of the writer and their purpose in both texts and, particularly through consideration of Weldon’s contextualisation and form, the reader’s perspective of both texts is reshaped and enhanced. Furthermore, Weldon perceives and forges a connection with Austen to illustrate both authors’ didactic purposes and allows the reader to re-evaluate the form and purpose of Pride and Prejudice against Weldon’s feminist and postmodern context.…

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, education was strictly a man’s world. According to Debra Teachman in her article Women’s Education and Moral Conduct, Teachman states that “Women… had no schools of recognized academic excellence available to them and were ineligible for university attendance because of their sex” (Teachman 109). For Elizabeth Bennet, the main character in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice, she prided herself on her intelligence versus that of her sisters and most men in the society. In Teachman’s article, she draws many parallels between the views of authors of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, and the actions and beliefs in Pride and Prejudice.…
