The Outsiders, is a book written by the american author S.
E. Hinton. It is a groundbreaking work of fiction in the history of young adult literature. The story was published in 1967, when Hinton was just 16 years old. In the novel Hinton realistically creates dialogue, characters, and settings that represent actual teenage lives in the United States. It explores a variety of themes, including social class rivalries, alcoholism, poverty, violence, teenage gangs, and cruelty. When Hinton wrote the novel the themes were unusual for young adult literature. The novel covers several days in the life of a group of teenagers. The characters are based on Hinton’s classmates in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, though the state and city are not specifically named. Hinton began writing The Outsiders when she was just a sophomore in high school. After a publisher accepted her the novel grew in popularity by words of mouth as teenagers responded to a story that reflected their real lives. The story follows the character of Ponyboy Curtis, gives you an inside view of high school boys who are outsiders in their environment. Hinton began her career as an author when she was still a fifteen years old high school student from oklahoma. Susan has been regarded as “a representative writer in new realist young adult literature” (Zhang Ying and Yang Qianfan, 2005, p. 54). Her interest for reading in her childhood influenced her to write something real about what the greater of children are actually doing in their everyday lives instead of reading “Mary Jane Goes To Prom” from time to time. Hinton’s disapproval of the unfair and non-realistic action of children’s warm and pleasant life in traditional adolescent novels inspires her to create real young adult fiction of class conflict and gang rivalry with the appalling facts of violence, alcoholism, drug addiction, and poverty. Hinton describes that “the survival and maturation of her adolescent male protagonists, tough yet tender lower-class boys who live in and around Tulsa and who grow by make difficult decisions.” annoyed by the bullying that is happening to her friend a greaser by a socs she starts to think of a story of a greaser being jumped and beaten by the socs while he was walking home from the movie house with no company. Hinton won a great success of this novel The Outsiders which was published during Hinton’s freshman year at the university. The story of the outsiders is told by a character in the story called Ponyboy Curtis who is a poor greaser on the east side. His parents died in a car crash while he lives with his two
older brothers who are Darrel and Jr. Soda Curtis. Ponyboy prefers Soda over Darrel
