Good parents are portrayed as being sympathetic to their children, providing both material and emotional support, and listening to their children. Bad parents, however, are ones who do not meet these guidelines. In the novel Pride and Prejudice the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are contrasted between a father who cares about whats inside of people and a mother who only worries about vanity and appearance. Mr. and Mrs. Bennets parental guidance is unique to their personalities. Because of their two opposing chracters, Mr. and Mrs. Bennets ideas of marriage are contradictory for their daughters Mr Bennet is a very intelligent man who refuges himself in books rather than relating with his family, but he is not interested in the families needs, he believes in a loving respectful marriage whereas Mrs. Bennet values a marriage which concerns wealth and social status. Their aspirations for Lydia, Jane, Mary, Kitty and Elizabeth mirror their conflicting ideologies. Mr. Bennet seems to have a quiet deep love for his daughters while, on the contrary, Mrs. Bennets love is over-acted. Both parents help to shape their daughters characteristics and beliefs Lydia reflecting Mrs. Bennets flighty and excessive behavior while Elizabeth inherits Mr. Bennets pensive and reflective temperament. Mr and Mrs Bennet have not shown any parental qualities in what implies with the education of the Bennet children, since Mr and Mrs Bennet are not conscientious about educating their children because all they wanted for their children was to get married to a higher or equal class. In fact the Bennet childrens lack of education is seen a lot by Lady Catherine De Bourgh who comments on the lack of education that the Bennet daughters have had by saying your mother must have been a slave to your education without a governess and also saying upon the lacking in the girls education is play and sing. Not only, Lady Catherine almost accuses Elizabeths parents of neglect stating that you must been neglected. Lady Catherine makes a comment on the amount of freedom that the Bennet girls enjoy on their socialising with everyone thinking that they should not be able to go out and make aquaintences. Mrs Bennet is not a good mother because her only goal in life is for her five daughters to get married to high class well paid men, the business of her (MrsBennet) life was to get her daughters married. However, this is a worthwhile goal because in those days women couldnt heritage rom their parents, so it was a good advice for Mrs Bennet to give to her daughers since they needed to get married to have respect and to be in order to maintain their place in society. However this wouldnt be considered good as a mothers only goal in life nowadays because women have become able to get their own right and to have jobs and have a career. Mrs Bennet is very sneaky, once she is involved in getting her daughter s married, Mrs Bennet the comfort of having a daughter well married, especially with Jane towards Bingley, finding the way to get Jane closer to Bingley. Mrs Bennet during Pride and Prejudice to ensure that Jane and Bigley have a chance to get to know each other well by sending Jane by horseback in the rain to Netherfield to meet Mr Bingley, you had better go on horseback, because it seems likely to rain and then you must stay all night. Therefore more rich people will be thrown in her daughters path. Mrs Bennets bragging had a terrible effect, Mr Darcy hears it and is put off and shops Bingley away from Jane. In addition the Bennet family will be having financial problems since money is a worry for the Bennet daughters despite the fact that they live in a nice, big house since Mr Collins will inherit everything because hes the closest male family member. In terms of financial security Mr Bennet has not been a good father in terms of thinking about his daughters because he spent all his money for himself. When Lydia elopes with Wickham Mr Bennet is not able to use his finances to help persuade Wickham to marry Lydia because he doesnt have the money. When Mr Bennet discovers that Darcy cleared up the financial mess between Lydia and Wickham he doesnt make a sincere attempt to repay Darcy hence he is grateful that he doesnt have to be responsible for the money anymore, but not towards Darcy because he takes it for granted implying, if he was my brother I had to pay him.. However, it is Mr Bennets fault that Lydia eloped because he wasnt responsible enough, and with one daughter gone there will be less problems and responsibilities to think about. Despite all this Elizabeth tried to warn Mr Bennet of the dangers of letting Lydia go to Brighton, Lydia will never be easy till she has exposed herself in some public place or other.. On the other hand Mrs Bennets reaction to Lydias elopement with Wickham before the marriage was feeling sorry for herself and becoming hysterical but after the marriage she is proud to have another daughter married. Mrs Bennet says I cannot bare to think that they (Mr Collins and his wife Charlotte Lucas) should have all this estate, this is not consoling to Mrs Bennet. Mr and Mrs Bennet offer some good parental qualities throughout Pride and Prejudice for example Mr Bennet tells Elizabeth not to marry Mr Darcy as he thinks she doesnt love him, little does her real feelings towards Darcy , I know that you could be neither happy nor respectable, unless you truly esteemed your husband. Mr Bennet says this to Elizabeth because he doesnt want her to make the same mistake he made marrying Mrs Bennet, we all know him to be proud, unpleasant sort of man. But unlike Mrs Bennet, Mr Bennet is guiding Elizabeth and understands her feelings. if this to be the case he deserves you, I could not have parted with you my Lizzy, to any one less worthy. Mr Bennet reacts calmly compared to everyone else he was his ironic sense of humour again your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr Collins, and I will never see you again if you do. He expresses his opinion though humour. Mr Bennet has favouritism which is bad for a parent to have, I will send a few lines by you to assure him of m hearty consent to his marrying which ever he choses of the girls though I must throw a good word for my Lizzy. He is being a good parent towards Elizabeth, however a bad one to the other daughters. Unlike Mr Bennet, Mrs Bennet prefers Lydia and Jane to the others but like Mr Bennet she is favouring her children as saying good unreal and Lydias sense of humour. This isnt good parentive. . In fact Mr and Mrs Bennet both pick their favourite children.I n conclusion I think that Mr and Mrs Bennet parenting skills are shocking Mr. Bennet is not considered to be a good parent because he was too passive. When he could have offered helpful advice, he buried himself in his study. He owed it to his daughters to play an active role in their lives and provide guidance.
