The Parsley Garden Sparknotes
In the story “The Parsley Garden” a boy named Al Condraj steals a hammer. Al Condraj gets caught stealing. He gets set off with a warning, hating the men that made him feel embarrassed. He builds up courage and pride to go into the store and work out a better way to get the hammer. Al Condraj gave a valuable lesson about the story. He did not let his hurt pride keep him from his objective , in fact he maturely worked for what he wanted and strove to get it. The author William Saroyan interprets how Al Condraj steals the hammer and has to deal with his embarrassment of getting caught. Al condraj learns the ways of embarrassment but is struck with the word pride and doesn’t let himself down. When Al Condraj gets caught in the store stealing
the hammer, he’s brought to the boss by an employer who caught him. The boss asks him why’d he steal it but Al Condraj is embarrassed to answer. He gets released and “The first thing he did when he was free was laugh, but he knew he had been humiliated, and was deeply ashamed”. The boy Al Condraj is being shown how ashamed and embarrassed he is when he gets caught. He remains in that mood until he figured out a way to be optimistic. Al Conraj figures a way to rebuild his pride by thinking it slowly one day. He gets talks it out with his mother to see what ideas he can get but eventually he comes up with his. Al Condraj goes to work for the men and strove for what he wanted. When his mother came home, she found him building something and asked him how he’d get that hammer. In which he replied “I worked for it at the store”. Al Condraj’s way worked which helped him rebuild his pride back and got what he wanted. The author explained the maturity Al Condraj had in his mind. Throughout the story “ The Parsley Garden” William Saroyan expresses the message of a little boy who doesn’t give up by being humiliated but finds out a maturely and optimistic way to retrieve his pride and strive for what he wants. This may perhaps show others the message of getting things that you want way easier than stealing and is a great way to show maturity over time.
