The past is a poem about race, identity and the people who have been forgotten.
The poem is written in 1970, the writer is named Oodgeroo Noonuccal. She is from the tribe Noonuccal. She talks about the past, she is very eager to tell the reader that the past is something that shouldn't be forgotten. We are agreeing on her way of thinking. The past is a fact that we can't just sweep under the carpet. The past is what makes the world and the individual what they are today. As she says: The pas is all about us and within (l. 2)
She talks about the tribe and the memories connected. She calls the present accidental it shows that she i not satisfied of what her world has become. She is in suburbia, and describes the things around her. Then she falls into a dream, it seems as if she is longing after something. She describes that she is with her ‘’own people’’ this quote shows that she feels alone, because she is not with her ‘’own people’’. She talks about nature and how it is being free, with no walls and in a place where nature makes it own music. She tells where she is know, but it doesn't matter cause the campfires ar in her blood. His mother was a aboriginal, which was married into a white family. Freddy tells us about, how the aboriginal people reacted, when he waved at them at the start, because he was a whitefella. Then he started hanging out with them, but all he thought, that they did, was drinking and stuff like that. Later he spent time in jail, and then he realised, what white people think about , the aboriginals. They think, that the aboriginals people are dumber, when the are not. Freddy is just so lucky, that he can hide from the society, when things get hard. But Freddy did not care, what the society felt, because he is still and will always proud of his
