The doctor states “he is away on business” (11), yet he is clearly inside. The reason he says this is because he thinks of Kino’s people like animals. He is racist and very mean, not only would he do nothing but if someone was broke and was dying on his doorstep he would just let them die. “I alone in the world am supposed to work for nothing” (11). He could care less about his job, he is only about the money. This is extremely crazy because he already is very wealthy and sits around eating nonstop when others have no food. Then as Kino finds the pearl he is instantly willing to treat Kino’s baby and even calls him his patient. He is a lying, racist, lazy doctor. He could not be any worse.
By using the doctor, mountains, and the pearl Steinbeck shows things are not what they always what they seem to be. He shows that the pearl is evil and dangerous but it shows hope at first. He shows how the mountains could be salvation but is also death. Finally he shows how the doctor is a racist, lazy person which is exactly what doctors are not.
