Violence takes a major role in most famous works of writing. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Lennie took the life of Curley’s wife away without realizing it. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor’s creation controlled him to the point of willing to make another, but he soon changed his mind. Quick decisions can change the course of a character’s life as seen through the choices of Lennie and Victor.…
Literature can be an extremely powerful tool of persuasion. One man with one idea has the potential to influence hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people through writing. In fact, one particularly influential piece of literature convinced an entire population of people to ostracize, shun, and even murder their fellow citizens. Compelling texts such as Hitler’s Mein kampf allow me to believe that literature could be considered propaganda. These pieces of literature, when written to pacify a specific audience, can strongly appeal to humanity’s “passions”, as Plato suggests. I believe that authors use literature as a vehicle to demonstrate their personal beliefs and influence their audience to share those beliefs.…

Throughout history, the power of words has heavily influenced the development of our civilization. Words allow us to link our mind to the outside world and represent humankind’s intellect. Although they are essentially a bunch of letters grouped into one, they are the basis of communication. They allow people to influence, educate, and entertain others. There are many kinds of words: long words, short words, large words, small words, uncommon words, and more, and when put together, can be used to someone’s advantage, both positively and negatively.…
Contrary to popular beliefs which state that war glorifies patriotism and machoism; Wilfred Owen's 'The War Poems' strips back all that is perceived as good and warns readers of the dark underbelly of war. By targeting all the senses of the readers, Owen is able to reveal the main message that lies beneath all the words of his poetry: war is futile. By examining the warnings and messages Owen tries to convey, not only do the detrimental effects of war on a soldier's mentality become stark; readers are also allowed to immerse themselves into a world filled with war propaganda. In constructing his poetry in such a way, the warnings of the horrors of war act as a deterrent to all of those who still believe the Old Lie: 'Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori'.…
The Radical Reconstruction had a large amount of impacts on the emancipated blacks and the south. The blacks were freed but were still subjected to racism, hate, and inequality. The radical republicans tried their best to fight for the rights of the freedmen, but at the end of the Reconstruction, the freedmen were still treated unfairly. An advantage of the Reconstruction is that it restored the United states into one union. Therefore, there were both advantages and disadvantages to the Reconstruction.…
In most every culture literature is revered. It is not an amplification when it is said that the pen is mightier than the sword. Speeches, and their subsequent written counterparts, carry a great deal of power. Consider Martin Luther King Junior, or even Adolph Hitler. Their words sparked movements that sent their societies spinning towards a new progression of life. What about poets? Those who can convey a traditionally mundane life into a flourishing undulation of sentiment. Have you ever considered the activists in the black community who were able to do so in spite of the educational, and societal misfortune they endured?…
Robin Williams once said, “No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” Numerous people today would disagree with the statement words hold more power than weapons. However, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., and Decius from The Tragedy of Julius Caesar are all examples throughout history that clearly reveal that words can entice the most influential people. I completely agree; words hold more power than weapons. There is an abundant amount of power held in a single word or statement.…
Words are more powerful than actions. Many people would disagree, but all great speeches by famous people such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln and even Adolph Hitler demonstrate that words are more powerful than actions. Strong words speak louder than actions. Actions are needed but sometimes your words can be more help than anything you could possibly do. Words can change the way a person views and idea. A person skilled with words can capture an audience and can even change the world just by talking.…
