for the first time that I belonged somewhere”(134). Patrick and Sam obviously signify the world to Charlie, and it doesn’t take much for them to make him feel like the center of the universe. All the feeling of helplessness melt away and his problems appear to no longer exist. He had been longing for the sense of belonging- something that he was deprived from his family, but something that he found in Patrick and Sam.
Moreover, Stephen Chbosky exemplifies the importance of a friendship because that is the only thing Charlie needs to be happy. For instance, when Charlie wins back his friendship with Sam after a conflict he claims, “Sam dropped me off. When she was too far away to see me, I started to cry again. Because she was my friend again. And that was enough for me”(167). Charlie’s cry can be thought of a cry of relief, all he ever wanted was the comfort that only a friend could achieve. Sam is the only thing Charlie needs for him to be completed and to feel as he truly is. Without her he felt lost in the big world that he feared so much, and he wasn’y capable battleling the obstacles of life by himself. When he finally gains her back, His relief is based that he no longer has to fear the world because he has someone that give him strength to keep on in life. When something you love is lost, such a golden necklace that your mother gave you that has been past for generations, you feel vulnerable and exposed. You fear the cosequences of your mother just as Charlie fears the consequence of a failed
life. However, when you find that necklace, you feel as if your whole world is completed and everything else isn’t important, just as Charlie felt when he gained Sam’s friendship. Sam acts like Charlie’s golden necklace and this time he never is going to lose her. In conclusion, The Perks of Being of Wallflower demonstrates the beauty and importance that a friendship can provide.
